Reminiscing .....

P.H.Rose

Two streets away they would process the fish,
gutted and skinned and made ready for a dish.
Processors with beards, rubber aprons and knifes
Worked along side, hair net fish packing wife's
Very busy, very noisy and always that smell,
but now it falls silent and nothing more we can tell.
I walk silent roads filled with memories and ghosts,
the smell is now gone and so have the hosts.
In modernisation everything changes or so i am told,
but some things should stay as a thing to behold.
Those people were hard but honest and fair,
small boxes for houses, crammed in a small square.
Our garden was a yard, concrete for grass
a ball between brothers was easy to pass.
Melancholy overtakes me, tears in my eyes,
this is where my life started and my history lies.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I recently walked the road where I was born, next to Albert Dock where all the fishing trawlers came in. Two streets from where I lived the processing plants were situated. There's now a carpark and main road there. It made me feel very sad walking the street.

Thanks PHR for a glimpse and a scent of your CHILDHOOD. Living near the coast is always a blessing because you can see and scent the fish as it lands ~ sometimes still alive. As a child you have the opportunity to realise that milk does not grow in plastic bottles ~ eggs in elegant plastic boxes and fish in tins or plastic bags ! I love to visit the FISH HALL in HARRODS ~ LONDON ~ ENGLAND ~ all of God's fish are there fresh as the day they were caught ~ awesome. Thanks for the memory in a beautifully crafted poem as usual ! Yours BRIAN ~ Please check my poems ~ Thanks B
