ALONE

Michael Edwards

ALONE

The lantern swings behind my back,

with casting light

before me, shadows fall.

And in my wake the temporary stain

of fallen tears on shifting sand

while footprints left

which drift away

as idle winds that blow

pursue the shortest path.

My silent voice calls out,

the stars make no reply.

My life unknown

will not display in history.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Another painting of my local town to accompany one of my serious scribbles. All these poems have been written over time and I've got a good few to go yet but I must add that each one takes me several days to write and I go back to them time after time tweaking and playing around with them. I do write the humerous ones in one sitting but certainly not the serious stuff. I heard the following advice once regarding writing whether it be book or poetry : review, revise, review, revise, review, revise.

  • Fay Slimm.

Stunningly good painting and words of aloneness which read slowly evoke tears - a compelling read.

    • Michael Edwards

Thanks so much Fay - must admit I felt a bit melancholy reading it through again myself - I'm a fairly happy guy as you can tell by my whimsical pieces and always look forward and yet the serious stuff nearly always seems to turn out a bit sad or reflective.

Beautiful write. I really like the second stanza. And a beautiful painting too!

      • Michael Edwards

Thanks Christina - yes I like the last stanza - I had the words 'will not display in history' drifting around in my mind for some time and wanted to find a suitable home for them and hope you agree that they work well in this little piece.
