U N E M P L O Y E D ! An Acrostic

BRIAN & ANGELA

UNEMPLOYED MAN BEGGING ON THE STREET IN LONDON

UNEMPLOYED ~ has a very negative ring to it !

NO JOB ~ NO HOME ~ NO HOPE downward spiral

EVERYBODY in the UK ~ of working age and

MENTALLY & PHYSICALLY able to work ~ would

PREFER to be WORKING rather than UNEMPLOYED !

LOSS of Jobs due to mechanisation ~ competition and

OTHER FACTORS make finding a suitable job difficult

YOU often have to relocate or retrain in order to stay ......

EMPLOYED !  Also some jobs are Difficult ~ Dirty and

DANGEROUS and some people prefer to be UNEMPLOYED !

  • Comment from author about the poem: I have been "between jobs" for a few weeks ~ but technically I have never been long term UNEMPLOYED. I have helped Unemployed Young people (16 - 30) working with a Vocational College and the YMCA. Finding a suitable job (especially a "first job") is increasingly difficult. Some Young People are prepared to do anything but some just want to be "Entertainers" or "Footballers" unsociable working hours on Zero Hour Contracts is much less appealing. My attitude is that being EMPLOYED is much better than being on UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS an if one is employed it is easier to get a better job ! I do have some qualifications which is always a POSITIVE in JOB SEARCH also an updated CV and positive interview techniques communication and appearance. UNEMPLOYMENT is very difficult to cope with for the over 40's and some get very depressed which in some caes can lead to suicide. If you have Unemployed Family & Friends give them 100% support and TLC and help them with positive Job Search. What is your experience ~ comments welcome ~ Yours BRIAN

without an address you can not get a job or benefits, without any money you can not have a roof over your head it is a horrid vicious cycle for people in that position. Best of luck in finding something, may consider doing a college course to help improve your chances, also being occupied during the day might help fulfill a spot, get you out meeting new people keeps your spirits up. very true verse 🙂

THANKS MAMMY ~ I'm personally OK at the moment and have a PART-TIME job teaching Applied Science in a College. The Young People I worked with in the YMCA were all technically homeless ~ BUT ~ they could use the YMCA address to get benefits ~ a doctor / dentist and a lace on a College Course. The problem is that unemployed and homeless b people often get involved with drugs ~ alcohol etc and become unemployable ! It is a vicious cycle ! Yours BRIAN.

Yes, 100% support. I agree that the feeling of failure and low-self esteem appear to grow in the unemployed. But, one must also be willing to take any job in the interim. At least, as mammyo3 says so well, they will be active and out there among people, and potentially meeting their next, new boss. Great points Brian!

Thanks HONEY ~ they all need our support ! Those who are made redundant later in life (40+) and have a wife and family to support are often worse off ~ they loose their self esteem as well a their job. A friend of mine in a similar situation and unable to find another suitable body was so low with depression that he took his own life. Such a tragedy. Helping people to find employment should be our priority. Thanks ~ Hugs BRIAN

🙁 So sorry about your friend.

I guess where I live in the US we take care of our own though of course there is the unemployment population on unemployment benefits. But there must be a population without children without an address that I have not seen in that cycle that mammyo3 talks about. Because we do have a homeless shelter. Very thought provoking write. I know in the big cities it's a tremendous problem! I have a relative that walk by the homeless just to get to his building. And I agree with WBL too. Solid write, Brian! Great job. Hugs in the spirit! Christina

Thanks CHRIS in a Family Unit and a small community we can support the UNEMPLOYED and even find a job for them . The scale of HOMELESSNESS linked with UNEMPLOYMENT ~ in a large CITY ~ requires the assistance of groups like the YMCA and the Social Services etc. As MAMMY says training etc is very important for Young People ~ especially ~ to be successful in Job Search. Thanks for caring ~ Hugs in the Spirit ~ BRIAN.

I have spent many times, in between different jobs here and there. The job market is not an easy one to "shop" at. Great write

THANKS TONY ~ that is very true and it complements what I said about everybody preferring a JOB (any JOB ?) to the stigma and enforced idleness of UNEMPLOYMENT ~ Yours BRIAN

                Welcome

              • Michael Edwards

A bit of a social blot on our so-called democracies that this should still occur in the modern age but it does. Have a friend who runs pop-up food shelters so I know the problems these poor unfortunate people suffer.

                • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks for your comment MICHAEL ~ The sad thing is the need for Food Banks & Night Shelters is increasing and BREXIT is going to make it even worse. Our Church is part of a TOWNWIDE SOUP RUN and the are more "takers" each week. I'm just thankful I have friends ~ a job and a warm flat ~ AMEN ~ BRIAN

Live discussion you have stirred Brian. Like Edwards says, even in our time, the plight continues. Unemployed is a vivid reality to ponder and do something about it. Great write.

GRACIAS AMIGO ~ A Job and a Home should be the right of every adult (over 18) on the Planet. Planet Earth has enough resources for 10 or more BILLION it is just unevenly distributed ~ The top 3% have half the Worlds goods ! TRUMP does not need a Tower just a THREE BEDROOM HOUSE like the rest of us ! Thanks for your COMMENT ~ Brian
