A Question

Dawn

A Question

There is a question.
An imposing impossible question
I'm asked every second of the day.

It's thrown around without any initial thought
Like part of the common tough.
–"What are you going to be?"

What do you mean "what am I going to be?"
Is what I am today
Not acceptable by your standards?

In a world full of endless possibilities
How am I supposed to choose?
How am I supposed to know what I'm meant to do?

What are you going to be?
Before asking me
Ask yourself.

Can you truthfully, confidently say
This is what I am.
This is my entirety.

I highly doubt it!

Instead of guessing what I'll be in the future
I'll live in the present
The moment.

The me now is exactly what I'm supposed to be.
I will change
I will grow.
You will change
You will grow.

I'll look to myself
And do what I can now
Not dwell on what I'll do later.

So don't ask me what I'm going to be
Because I don't know.
And maybe I never will
Until I do.
And neither will you.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I is a poem trying to expres the notion that its okay to not have evey askect of your life planed out. If you dont know what you want you like carrer to be, that ok cause it might change in a day, a year, of half way though your life.

WELCOME ANIKA ~ Thanks for your first poem which poses a question for us all WHAT WILL I BE ? ~ the answer should always be QUE SERA SERA ~ What will BE will BE ! You are fortunate to live in the 21st C because in essence ALL OCCUPATIONS are open to Young People irrespective of Gender ! I am an Environmental Scientist and teach Applied Science (Part Time) to Young Adults (16+). I have always been interested in Science and had the opportunity to Work and Study (part time) one has to ake advantages of opportunities for employment and training. In today's volatile Society people often change the sphere of their work & study (QUE SERA SERA) So (in essence) I agree with your answer that we DON'T KNOW what the future holds ~ We just have to be optimistic ~ resilient and go with the flow ! Thanks for sharing ~ Yours BRIAN (UK)
