SAINT VALENTINE was a Christian Priest in 3rd C Rome
AND CHRISTIAN MARIAGE was forbidden by Claudius
IT WAS DIFFICULT for Valentine to refuse to marry the
NEWLY converted Young Christians in a very permissive
TIME when polygamy (several wives) was very popular !
VALENTINE had to marry the Young Couples in secret
AND he was imprisoned for his illicit marriages. And
EVENTUALLY he was condemned to death for his crime. A
NOTE sent to the Judge's Daughter ~ who he cured from
THE LOSS OF SIGHT ~ was signed "From Your VALENTINE"
IN 269 AD Valentine was Beaten ~ Stoned and Decapitated.
NOW we celebrate Valentine's Day with Cards & Red Roses
EVERY CARD & TOKEN is a symbol of Everlasting Love ~ AMEN

- Comment from author about the poem: In Christian History it is always satisfying when our traditions like Christmas & Easter can be related to events recorded in the Bible and Church History. Because he was martyred there is a sadness i the historic story of Saint Valentine but it encourages us to remain faithful even in the face of impending death. The Judge Asterius ~ whose daughter Valentine healed ~ was converted to Christianity because of the excellence of the Christian character and courage shown by Valentine. Thanks DILLAN for your kind comment. It's better to be safe than sorry ~ you never know who is watching you ! Yours BRIAN
Very timely piece Brian. Happy Valentine's Day.
Thanks HONEY ~ I like all our Christian customs and practices to be historically verified ~ Hugs for Valentines Day ~ BRIAN.
Such an interesting read on why Valentine's day is celebrated with love and togetherness - such a sad end to a life devoted to helping others - another fine read and thank you Brian for sharing history of which I knew very little.
Thanks FAY for your kind comment ! Poetry as you know can amuse ~ castigate ~ instruct etc ~ but it can also inform. The beauty of poetry it is (normally) more concise than prose and can also act as a aide-memoire ! BRIAN
Well written and expressed Great write
Thanks TONY ~ Pleased you enjoyed it ~ BRIAN

Thanks PHILIP ~ I always enjoy Valentine's Day ~ Love is all around ~ BRIAN
День святого Валентина католический праздник. Мне, почти атеисту, немного православному, сложно понять, что в святые попал человек, нарушавший закон. Но это выбор Вашей церкви. Поэтому, пусть будет так:):)
Thanks for your comment ! YES He did violate the Law of the Land because he believed it violated God's law of Monogamous Christian Marriage. The Catholic Church always believes the Law of God supersedes the Law of Man. Valentine was made a Saint because he was a martyr and because of his miracle ~ restoring sight to the blind. Yours BRIAN (UK)
Excellent sonnet.
Very clever and we'll executed.
Did you know as late as the 19th century . Valentines Day was used by the public to send hate filled letters to each other and dead animals were posted to people they didn't like .
Quite different to today's commercially driven hell.
THANKS FRIEND ~ Love & hate are the two sides of the same coin ~ ask any lady who has been "scorned" ! For my Lady I always send a self~made VALENTINE ~ these can be elegant using desk top publishing ~ and a mini rose bush in a pot which (hopefully) lasts forever and I would cook her a meal in my Flat instead of paying £50 which some restaurants charge on Valentines Night ! Comercialisation is an expert at taking something Divine (like Christmas) and making it TAWDRY ! Thanks BRIAN
