THE HOUSE OF LORDS ~ AT WORK ?

BRIAN & ANGELA

SOME MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS

WE ALL LOVE FANCY DRESS !

What's happening to BREXIT

Ruth asked in strident chords

I said "It's being SCRUTINISED"

In The House of Lords !

How does that work ? It doesn't work

It's just a Top Nobs perk !

Lots of Senior Men & Ladies

Very very posh ~ Elite of our Society

With lots and lots of dosh !

Some are Landed Gentry ~ some are ex~PM's

Some gave lots of money and some are really gems !

The role is VOLUNTARY ~ none of them get paid

They just clock in and have a gin

And then clock out again !

They get attendance money ~

The Men wear starched white collars

The Good the Bad the Funny

Come in the door ~ sit on the floor

Collect five hundred dollars !

Some do debate and prant and prate

And hum and har on Brexit

Fudge it a LITTLE ~ JOT and TITTLE

And then head for the EXIT !

  • Comment from author about the poem: The HOUSE of LORDS is an unelected Second Chamber ~ which is required to scrutinise major Bills from the Commons (Like BREXIT) before they become Law. All are well heeled ~ Ex Prime Ministers ~ People from Sport (Lord Coe) and Show Business (Lord Andrew Webber) Academics (even Scientists) like Lord Todd of Trumpington. Some were Leaders of Industry who often made large donations to Political Parties. Female Lords are of course called LADIES and are 22% of the total. There are 776 Members 26 are Bishops ! 90 Heredity (Daddy was Lord) and 660 are Grace & Favour Life Peers. America has 5 times the population of the UK but her Upper House only has 100 Members ! It's called the Senate and each State (irrespective of size) is represented by Two Senators. Thanks for reading ~ comments welcome ~ Lordly Love ~ BRIAN XOX

I love the poignancy of this and so timely. It just goes to underline the fact that there is no true democracy in the western world where there is no proportional representation and finance dictates who rules.

Very true MICHAEL ~ In essence the UK ~ and especially ENGLAND is still an Aristocracy but based on money rather than breeding ! Yours BRIAN

Very educational poem. Looks like you have your own issues like Brexit to deal with. Why are they all dressed up like that? Tradition? Great poem!

Thanks CHRIS ~ pleased you enjoyed it ! TRADITION ? ? ? Of course Tradition it's what the British are Famous for. These are Lords & Ladies so they have to precess in the Red Gowns & Ermine so the Commoners will know their place ! It's all harmless antiquated fun really ~ but some take it seriously. Dress Code is always important ~ it starts in the Private (Public) Schools ~ Like Eton and Oxford & Cambridge and ends in the House of Lords ~ OK~ A Lordly Hug ~ BRIAN

Really nice poem! I like the rhythm, I like the theme! It's interesting to think about how difficult it's to have a participatory democracy. The lack of time, technical knowledge and expertise of most voters justify trusting representatives to do the job. However, if we (voters) do not show interest and the representative feels there is no accountability, then we may end up with a government that do not represent ourselves...

Thanks FRIEND ~ for a very perceptive reply ! It is quid-pro-quo ~ we need to show respect to those we elect (and equally to those we don't) and they will respect and represent us in Parliament. The problem arises because the House of Lords (UK) are NOT elected. They are either hereditary (If your dad was a Lord) or Grace & Favour (Cronies of the Prime Minister etc). Yours BRIAN
