A Mother

lr

I feel love and I am compassionate,
My children I love,
My duty to nurture and protect,
I am beautiful within,
I am kind,
I am sensitive,
I will protect my young at all costs,
Who wouldn't?

A child's bond as any mother will know is instinctual,
Paternal,
Unwavering,
Precious,
Deep,
Eternal,
Transcendent,
Her loving eyes enchant me, she kisses my face affectionately.

I'm dying,
Dying,
Dying,

The unbearable burning, stabbing in my heart, binds me down,
Where has my baby been taken?
I'm drowning, No one hears me.

Adorned in worn jackets they drag my baby into the dark empty cage,
Why do these monsters abuse my baby so?
My body screaming for air that rips my lungs, I cannot breathe,
Screaming of my child pierces every particle of my body,
I pray for mercy of my baby,
Never to see my lost baby again,
Why has humanity wronged me?
Why is my life and babies but a commodity?
My life is not their's to use,
To maim and do as they please,
To what fate does my baby await?

What will become of me when I am weak through perpetual labour,
And no longer able to walk?
How long before I am dragged away too?

But my pleese for mercy,
My voice is lost on deaf ears,
Of the cold hearts of man.

The virtue of empathy,
extending beyond the eyes of man to the voiceless,
weak, and vulnerable is a lesson one must learn to embrace love over hierarchy.

I will protect my young at all costs,
Who wouldn't?

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem reflects the perspective of a mothers deep intuitive love for her child in all walks of life, from humans and also to animals and I was deeply moved by learning how animals too share very deep connections with their children. \r\nAcross all walks of life there is nothing more universally precious than the bond of love between mother and child. Yet how animals are objectified as commodities for exploitation for human use. How human dominance over animals mechanically removes bond between mother and child in heart breaking way. I wanted to convey how animals are so much more precious if we could only step back and appreciate the individual. Researching how much a mother cow bonded with her child straight from birth was so striking to me that I wanted to convey these very human feelings to the audience to feel her pain and to relate on a personal level, as any person can empathise with this traumatising experience. But I wanted to audience to question the morality of this unnecessary treatment of animals and how we can protect these beautiful creatures from exploitation after all they are in so many ways much more like us than we give them credit for.

WELCOME LR ~ Thanks you for your first poem which is replete with compassion and concern for Mothers (human ~ feral ~ domesticated) and their young. I have studied Biological and Behavioral Science so I aware just how strong the bond between a Mother and her off~springs are throughout the Animal Kingdom. The more mentally developed the Animal the stronger the bond! I agree with your complaint that for the purpose of food and finance we remove Young from their Mothers with scant regard for the psychological and physiological effect on both the Mother and the young. In the UK when Mums with neonates are imprisoned ~ they are not separated from their babies ~ or the sentence is postponed. Mothers are nearly always given custody of pre~school children. Thanks for caring ~ BRIAN (UK) Please check my poems ~ Thanks B.
