I have a tool,
Of which I use.
When those varmints,
Of me, abuse.
A trusty sling shot,
Bought at the store.
To help those creatures,
That I adore.
My sling shot is always,
Close at hand.
To shoot Lima Beans,
At things, can’t stand.
The beans don’t harm them,
Just scare them off.
My little bird feeder,
On a hook, aloft.
I sometimes use,
Marbles of glass.
To aim at the Squirrel’s
Fuzzy gray ass.
He gnaws and wrecks,
My feeder’s sides.
Where the birds,
Reach the seeds inside.
But, I never can,
Actually hit them,
No matter how hard,
And straight my aim.
On my list today,
Restock ammunition,
Set in a jar,
Kept in the kitchen.
The Lima Beans,
Have a dual purpose.
Eaten by others,
Who get them first.
The beans just don’t,
Fly real straight,
Still, stand by,
Patiently wait.

- Comment from author about the poem: Don't worry all you squirrel and varmint lovers .... I have never hit any of them. Usually aim at the tree trunk nearby. Ha Ha.

awesome write about the beautiful squirrel. they are very few and far between here in England. well done on this one WriteBeLight.
Thanks Kevin. They are cute. But here in the US they can be very destructive. Nonetheless, I never do them any harm. Thanks!
Its also a useful tool to get rid of cats who cause so much havoc - luckily with a wall enclosed garden we don't get too many but when they do stray they are such a pest.
I do find the cats and squirrels cute and funny, but it is better that I make sure the birds are fed. The squirrel is welcome to eat underneath the feeder, but not gnawing away at it with its destructive teeth 🙂 Thanks Michael.
this is a fun read. love that your intention is to scare and not kill.
my favorite verse is the one about using marbles....great image and definite chuckle!
i do have one suggestion that might make the flow of verse #7 a drop smoother:
no matter how hard
and straight my aim
I haven't hit one
I'm off my game
again this is just my take...all in all, i enjoyed the read!
Ha Ha! I love your editing! Very nice. Thanks!!
My pleasure! Glad you liked it!
Good write, I too have a catapult with which to frighten cats who come into our garden.
I do not get cats at all. We do have a problem with coyotes here, so I am hoping the cat owners protect them from the coyotes. But, the squirrel, chipmunk and red squirrel are so destructive to the garden bulbs, to roofs and the ground, with the holes they dig. That is just Mother Nature providing food and entertainment for all! Thanks Goldfinch!
