Fits tune; Duke Street

('Fight the good fight')

********

Almighty God, you give us grace

Humbly to seek you, seek your face

With one accord our prayers we make

O hear us for your dear Son's sake

Your promise is when two or three

Are gathered in your name, you be

There in the midst, will grant requests

As is your will, as you see best

Fulfil now , O Lord, the desires

And petitions from your inspires (inspirings)

Of your servants, expedient

As shall most be, most provident

Grant us in this world the knowledge

Of your truth, it to us full fledge

It reveal to us, it us bring

And lead us to life e'erlasting

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 88 88 metre. One of a series, maybe occasional, of short (or 'ish') poems based on Formal Prayers from a Service Book. Erm, some have suggested having the original hymn at their wedding (note the title! heehee).

      Thanks M.

'Expedient' (verse 3) can mean 'convenient' or 'practical'. There's a sense in which 'expedient' could possibly mean 'improper' or 'immoral', but I don't mean that here! Such prayers wouldn't be answered - or would be answered as 'No'!

I am most attracted to the spiritual significance here . Great lessons I never tire of hearing .

Thanks S. Some of the 'formal prayers' can get a bit wordy. I try not to lose the meaning of them - not to make them trashy or too 'modern'. We don't have to say 'thee' and 'thou' though. They're not used these days - or this Century!

Good write. And what is wrong with having 'Fight the good fight' at a wedding!

Thanks G/F. Ahh, so 'Fight the good fight' is the norm for many married couples? Or maybe it meant fighting with the mother-in law?! heehee. The joke is from a 'Carry On' film, I think - from some very old film anyway! Do us two know anything new?! I dug it out from my dust-laden library of video recordings. Yes, VHS.

It reminds me of and Uncle of mine who at their 25 years anniversary said "In our married life we have only had one argument - it started the day we were married!"

I think the saying about Fight the good fight at weddings appeared a long time before the Carry on films.
