Crescent Moon Memorial Buried Blues Band

swingline

It was a windless night denuded of sleep

So since it was warm I hit the streets

Walking under ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss

My path inevitably led to where everything

Was at a complete loss

Crescent Moon Memorial Cemetery

Final rest of the dead

Where all lie below their Earthly cares

Was  where my feet had somehow led

Row upon row of forgotten names

In all of their endeavors

Had been eased of their pains

Then as I trudged by at a quarter to three

A low chorus of voices and music

Through the mist

Came floating to me

I was startled but intrigued

"What mischief is this ?"

I had to go and see for myself

So I crept silently to where came the origins of this heavenly bliss

In a circle of bench seats

And monument stones

The strangest thing was there

That I had ever known

Ghosts and skeletons were playing them bones

And singing softly in guttural growls and morbid moans

A see through piano , trombone

Clairinet , drums and bass

One saxophone , a silver cornet

And a wailing guitar

That completed the set

On the translucent petal bass drum

Was the name of the etheral clan

And to a catchy tune I began to hum

Crescent Moon Memorial Buried Blues Band

The epitaph on the vaporous drum so aptly was stated

And I soon found myself completely enraptured

As a die hard fan I was to be captured

What seemed like a lifetime

They continued to play

Quaint soul soothing rthyms

That sure made my day

As the sounds drifted across the river

And out to the bay

But far off I heard the morning cock's call

Then phiff !

Vanished all into the fog without a trace

As if covered by an invisible pall

And then a ray of light caught the gleam in my eye

And I knew then that when

The time comes

Here's where I want to be placed

After I die

This is a wonderful write. We could do a concert me with my All Dead Stars Jazz Band and you withthe Crescent Moon Memorial Buried Blues Band, we will only then need a Country Band lead by the Man in Black and we can have a roaring time.

That sounds good to me . A battle of the bands .We could invite Charlie Daniels and he could play "The Devil Went Down To Georgia". Thank you Goldfinch60 for the invitation .

Started to read this and got really drawn in - great writing and it's the sort of place I'd like my ashes to be spread.

Could not help but think of the crescent city New Orleans on the river. Close to the French quarter where often there are jazz funerals. Great story and visual.

              • swingline

Thank you Augustus for reading and yes New Orleans is the basis for the poem where I've spent time off and on over the space of thirty years .

              • swingline

Ha ha , yes I can see that . That would be great . Thank you James Michael Schawb for reading .
