What makes a poet ?
That was my thought
I mulled it over and
Came up with these oughts
Late nights
With coffee , tea , or beer
Perhaps harder stuff
Whiskey , smoke or gin clear
And the struggles and pain
As the birth is exclaimed
Blood , sweat and tears
Falling down and getting back up again
Confessionals made
As black on white page
Love , death , fears
Even extreme rage
One who struggles
With the a's and the's
Should one even use
The apostrophe
One whose words
Gel at the witching hour
Words full of promise
Warnings so dour
But perhaps greatest of all
Before even the start
One must have
A true poet's heart

And a poet's pen - My best work is done first thing before my wife wakes - it's now nearly 7am (I have been up since 5) and even though I have been transfixed by the UK election results I have still spent an hour writing another poem which is now in my draft box awaiting several reviews over the next few days before I am happy with it.
I don't tend to have too many self-reviews of my poems - sometimes none! Not that I'm a super-confident, sparkling poet that gets it 100% right every first draft. But I rarely re-write whole poems, only do tweaks!
I'm taken by the election too and what it means for Britain . Thank you Michael for those excerpts from your life . And thank you for reading .
Thank you orchidee I usually write by tapping on my phone and later making a physical copy , sometimes years later . That's usually when I make any changes .
A super write, like Michael my time for writing is normally in the mornings but sometimes I see situations that give me an idea and end up writing at other times.
I tend to write (or post anyway) around late afternoon. Also, it helps with those of us in the UK, and those in USA, with the timings. though poems are there any time of the day or night of course, and can always search for authors/older poems/themes, etc.
I can usually write any time but finding the time is my problem . With limited time I usually have to write in the middle of the night or before dawn . Thank you Goldfinch60 for reading .
I really enjoyed this and it is ALL so true about being a poet....take care!
Thank you Jason Vancelette for reading I appreciate .
A fine write S.
There must be twin orchidee here at MPS . Thank you again orchidee for commenting .
Through the years I think I've written mostly in fits and spasms, usually grasping for whatever is nearest to me to pen a line. Lovely write, sir.
Thank you Heater T for reading and your comment .
