FESTIVAL OF ST ANTHONY - LISBON

FESTIVAL OF ST ANTHONY – LISBON

The custard tart yellow

of suns final offering

glimmers on revellers

emerging and laughing

and hovering balloons

shimmering, shining

look down on performers

in sumptuous satin

gyrating to sounds

of the pimba pulsating

and smells begin swirling

of grilling and searing

and into the night

the crowds remain heaving

eating sardines and spiritedly dancing.

  • Comment from author about the poem: My wife and I have been away touring across Portugal and whilst there we spent a few days in Lisbon. we were lucky in that this event took place while we were there. This poem was written on the night to reflect the atmosphere of the event. The pimba is a traditional dance where the couples dance close together facing each other rather evocatively and the sardine (along with custard tarts) is a national dish sold by street vendors and restaurants - many of the revellers actually even wear sardine hats - a bit like Santa claus hat but with a fish tail. ............................................................................................ By coincidence I painted a sardine some time ago and the picture hangs in our conservatory so took a quick photo this morning to accompany the poem.

  • Fay Slimm.

Michael your words paint such an evocative palette of colour on this Lisbon festival I can feel the exciting atmosphere and even smell those searing sardines.

Such a great evening Fay - luckily we missed the forest fires that took so many lives by just 24 hours - they are still burning.

Did he live until age 105 - St A? that the same St Anthony?!

            • Michael Edwards

St Anthony of Padua - Patron saint of Lisbon where he was born and Patron Saint of lost causes. I think he died quite young but not sure - must google him.

              Cracking poem Michael
              Transports you there...
I love Lisbon one of my
              Top 5 places I've visited
              In this wonderful world
              Of ours.. hope your having
              A great time sir....

              • Michael Edwards

Yes really enjoyed Lisboa but even better is Porto on the river Douro/.

Another super place is Cascais - just like the Riviera and equally expensive - we were relocated to a different hotel by our tour company and the cost if we booked independently was 350 euros a night bed and breakfast but the sun shone on us in more ways than one - we were then upgraded to a suite at 500 euros a night - sheer luxury.
