Fits tune: Coe Fen
('How shall I sing that majesty?')
Psalm 97
********
1. The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice
Make Him, the LORD, your choice
Let all the many isles be glad
Not mournful, downcast, sad
Clouds and darkness about Him are
He exalted by far
Righteousness and judgement they be
Virtues of His throne, see
2. For they are the habitation
Of His throne, He the one
Who rules righteously, judgements fair
And none can them impair
A fire goes before Hm, up burns
His enemies, save turns
Of repentance to Him they show
He does each heart full know
3. His lightnings the world enlightened
He them in power did send
To the earth, it saw, and trembled
It His presence recalled
The hills did melt like wax, for he
Lord of the whole earth be
Ever reigning, holy and good
We worship as we should
4. The heavens His righteousness declare
His glory everywhere
Is seen by all the people, known
He has it revealed, shown
Confounded they that serve idols
Be, who follows them falls
But Zion heard, in Him was glad
In robes of praise were clad
5. They rejoiced for you good judgements
O LORD, with no relents
You to them sent such, you are high
Above earth, sea, and sky
Exalted above all gods far
The bright, the morning-star
You that love the LORD, hate evil
He keeps those He does call
6. He preserves the souls of His saints
Sets free from all sins taints
Delivers them from wicked hands
Each one before Him stands
And light for the righteous is sown
Upright hearts gladness known
Rejoice in the LORD, righteous we
Give thanks, He e'er holy

Please click link to see clip on You Tube. Some mystical words in the original hymn, and going back to the end of the 17th Century for the author, John Mason.
Not to be confused with John Mason Neale, a later hymn-translator.
Great write
