Here's to us, all the walking wounded,
With wounds that are deep yet so close to the surface,
The slightest trigger can cause them to bleed.
Some wounds are fresh, others lifetimes old.
Some have scarred over, no longer painful.
Others fester, and seem never to heal.
Some wounds so painful to our very core,
As to drain our spirit of the will to live.
Yet we put one foot in front of the other,
Although we are staggered from time to time,
And welcome an occasional shoulder to lean on,
We manage to find the strength to press on.
But what, we may ask, is the point to this struggle?
And the answer, as always, comes from within ...
Is our strength not derived from a deep inner knowing
That wounds are but lessons we've chosen to learn?

Philosophical and a great write.
Much appreciated, Michael!
Great poem Louis
Well done!!!
Many thanks, P.H.! Very kind response.
In my rather Buddhist beliefs, what you refer to as wounds "inflicted by no fault of our own", don't exist! Rather, we enter into this world with prearranged agreements to suffer wounds inflicted by others in order to further our growth. And perhaps, to inflict wounds upon others to further theirs. Buddhists hold a longer range perspective of what life is all about ... it is all an ongoing learning and growing experience.
Thank you for your comments, Kat!
Very good write and very true, those lessons we learn are our experiences and they may hurt at the time but life is a learning curve to which we all abide.
Thank you for your wise reply, Goldfinch! It is indeed a learning curve, and experiencing is why we come, and continue to return here ... in my beliefs. It provides our souls growth as no other means of learning can.
Very true, our souls/Spirit are always growing.
