You are an angel shed of wing,
Aglow with the radiance
Of a soul still pure.
What a blessing it is
Experiencing bittersweet joy
Holding you against my chest,
Exchanging breath and heartbeat,
Being reminded of what it was like
When still connected to our true home.
There can be no greater satisfaction
Than that of touching heaven,
Holding a newborn child.

- Comment from author about the poem: This one grew out of my experience volunteering in our local hospital's NICU unit, (Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit), as a 'Cuddler'. We provided the loving human contact needed for newborns whose parents could not, or in some cases would not, be there. It was a great blessing for me, but difficult at times in the cases of 'drug babies' who were being slowly weaned off of the addiction passed on by their mothers. They could be inconsolable. More than once I left my shift fighting back tears. I would not take anything for the experience.

Sensitive write L.
On a lighter theme, a true tale - now look, in me First Aid practice, I didn't touch a woman's botty on purpose, did I? Or did I?! I would only make myself swoon! heehee.
You were surely touching heaven. Oh, I would get emotionally attached. There's other glimpses of heaven too, I believe - children playing, laughing; a dog running in the park; a sunset; etc.
It was impossible not to get emotionally attached to those tiny angels, some two pounds or less. But what a blessing to give them comfort. Thanks for this response, orchidee.
I don't know how I would cope. I can be insensitive too at times though. I would be 'into' Cuddles and Hugs!
Very powerful write. Your care for the babies shines through.
Thank you, Goldfinch. They are my favorite people.
Such a tender and caring write and to think you were cuddling a newborn under difficult circumstances - - bravo for this giving of time and self my dear friend and thank you for letting us know there are those who still care. An inspiring verse.
Speaking of those who care, the nurses in the unit were extremely caring, even though it was just a job for twelve hour shifts. It was inspiring to observe. Thank you for this generous response, Fay.
how beautiful
Thank you, phantom!
Absolutely beautiful! What a touching poem!
And yours is a touching reply. Thank you, Christina.
My admiration goes out to you raking on such a wonderful role = and a super poem to go with it.
The role was a blessing that I gave myself, and a wonderful blessing it was! Thanks for your comment on the poem.
Reading both your poem and your notes this is so beautiful. Thank you, you brought from me tears of joy at the beauty of rebirth and the love you obviously give so unselfishly.
Sorry for making you cry, but I appreciate you sharing in my emotions for these little angels who were starting life afflicted in many different ways. They often made me cry too.
Thank you Louis for a wonderful poem and also for being there for these little innocent angels.
Thanks, Fred. I'm sure that I got at least as much out of it as they did.
wonderful.
Thank you, onepauly.
Wow! A truly beautiful poem and a truly beautiful soul of yours. My admiration for your tender heart. I did not even knew about the cuddlers. How sweet.
Not all hospitals with NICU units offer the program unfortunately. Thank you for your very sweet reply!
