Alexis broke my heart,
She didn't mean to,
It wasn't her fault.
She didn't ask me to
Fall madly in love.
She wouldn't have known
It was destined to be fleeting.
She couldn't control
How she melted in my arms
With pure radiance on her face
That made the angels jealous.
Neither of us knew
Our hearts would entangle,
Binding us together
So quickly and completely.
I hid from her my parting tears.
God knows she has enough to deal with;
Facing foster care...with luck, an adoption.
Life is tough for an abandoned crack baby.

This is beautifully written. Your feelings pour out of it.
Poetry is such a wonderful way to pour out our feelings, isn't it? Thanks for your appreciation of this one.
It makes us all feel so helpless in being unable to prevent it happening - a heart telling poem.
It is a cruel fact of our lives ... but then life can be a cruel teacher. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond.
Louis, your love for this baby practically leaped off the page (or screen) and the sorrow in the last stanza was palpable. Wonderfully written!
God, I wanted to take her home so badly! She will always be with me. Thanks for your kind words, Fred.
That was so sad and touching. Brilliant
It is a sad reality, and so common. NICU nurses deal with it all the time. Thanks for your complimentary comment!
