A Letter Left Unopened

Thewildfire

Times are changing and so are we

but mindsets are the same

We listen

But we don't understand

We talk

But we don't discuss

We're left with closed minds and empty hearts

Words that could have saved a life

Are left in the breeze

Never to be heard

Never to be understood

I thought, just for a second

That you would hear me

That you

My counterpart

Would hear my cries

And understand that I was hurt

You left me

In fire

Burning and blazing at the mention of your words

You saw my pain

And you mocked it

Just because it was different from yours

Just because you didn't understand

But you chose not to

You chose to stay with a closed mind

And empty heart

That could have so easily been filled

With love and understanding

Yes, times are changing and so am I

Yet you choose to stay the same

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is about my mother, and how she never felt that she was in fault for anything. I have come to realize that I can't help her, but still I write poems to describe my emotions.

Your poem strikes a chord, Ariana. Mine was self-centered as well, deficient in empathy as you describe. Thank you for this very well written poem as your introduction to MPS!

It's easy to say, though it can become personal to some folk: 'There's no getting through to some people - or sometimes not'. Sadly this can include family. A fine write.

It becomes hard when the person you want the most in your life isn't there, but you learn to live which makes you a stronger person. Thank you for your comment...I appreciate it so much!

WELCOME ARIANA ~ Thanks for your first POEM ~ which will strike a chord with many ~ because as we develop and grow up (I'm 33 and live in my own Flat but still see both my parents) we are the NEXT GENERATION and this can distance us from our Parents. I am sad that the gulf between you and your Mum is so large ! Poetry is cathartic and it does help to share. MPS is a very empathetic site. Thinking of you ~ Yours BRIAN (UK) Love ALABAMA ~ Nice State to be in ~ very Friendly People in MOBILE !

Thank you for such kind words, and I was glad that I found this website to be able to share my emotions with others. Things happen and the sad part is you have to learn to move on. And it's nice of you to comment in, hope to keep in touch

          Yours truly,
          Ariana

I have been so lucky - I had a wonderful mother who I miss so much and super wife who has been a wonderful mother to out three children so I find it so hard how a mother can be anything other than loving. I therefor find this poem so sad and puzzling and I feel for you. This is such a great mature accomplished write about what must be a difficult subject for you. I look forward to seeing more of your work - keep writing Ariana.
