Poverty of the Soul

WL Schuett

in times of trouble

drowning in fear and doubt

where questions I can't answer

are casting all about

searching for the answers

that time and distance have stole

starving and neglected

there is a poverty in my soul

trying to reconcile

belief and non belief

looking for that middle ground

to open up that window

that I always knew to be there

but sadly now just can't be found

a chill is in the night air

the morning frost is keen

as for faith or unbelief

there is nothing in between

WL, great poem! And you are SO right! You either believe, or you don't. There is no middle ground. The light is either on or off. Very nicely written!

Thanks Fred It sure seems that way

      "as for faith or unbelief
there is nothing in between "
But it is in between, I stuck.

The guitar is in its best silence to listen your mind.
A poem with deep thoughts, a paint took mind to a far far land.

Really I am lost in between also but where ever I search I find no middle ground ,I thank you M&M for reading and thinking about this poem

The title drew me in and I was not disappointed at all.

It may be argued that the doubt you express in the first stanza constitutes some form of middle ground, where one oscillates between belief and non-belief. But you are absolutely right that in the end there is no true middle ground. Above all, how can one NOT take a stand on matters of the soul? Thoroughly enjoyed the piece.

The light switches on but which side of the divide does it fall - it depends on which side of the divide you settle I guess. Love this write which makes simple statements without being judgemental apart from the comment that ultimately there is nothing in between which is spot on.

                Thanks Michael I agree

Very good write and so very true. There is no compromise, I believe but will not force my opinions on others as belief or non-belief lies within each one of us and it cannot be changed by others.

That's the perfect response too bad everyone doesn't think that way , thank you

I am an optimistic man just because I look for something in between doesn't mean I don't have hope , charity and love ... love your comments thanks

I felt the struggle and conflict with oneself in this and as always your painting complimented your poem perfectly. I feel like the guy is standing contemplating, 'do I go on or turn back? I can't stay here inbetween' which is reflected in the poem.

Thanks Blue you really got my poem the essence of it is that you have to chose

The search shows that an answer will be found soon Bill - - the territory in between is the ground of awakening so hold on in there - spiritual wealth is worth all the searching my newly-found friend..
