Living on a 4/6

malubotelho

Thoughts has shifted, the important things are left behind,
I'm sleeping in a 4/6 feet space and happily making new friends.
They told me not to invade my neighbors territory but when I walk up at night
I saw my neighbor, now my friend sleeping with his head on my side.
I smiled and went back to sleep.
I've smelled the sour sweet mixed smell of women and men all together breathing the same air, all energy contaminated with fear but also willingness and patience.
There I was only one more. I needed no suit, no money, no status. I could not choose, my food, my space, my neighbor. I had to accept, understand,be polite, be smaller, be generous with others and also with myself.
There we had no color, no size, no face.
I felt safe among strangers, because there were no strangers.
I had a new family, created by the destiny of a huge storm.

  • Comment from author about the poem: During the hurricane Irma, I stayed with my family in a house that was protected by shutters and was not on a risky area. At some point was a bit scary and after the hurricane had passed completely we left the house and I saw huge trees were completely down. We were luck compared to others. We had electricity back the same day and internet the next day. Because of all the stress and working hard to put things back I begin to get sick. I'm feeling better today. This story I'm writing here is from a friend I've taken to a shelter. He stayed there for three days and was very touching what he told me about his experience at the shelter. I've tried to cover the main subject.

Malu, thank you for a very poignant and touching story. You covered the emotions and feelings of being in a shelter so well.

Thank you Fred. He touched me with his story. He is a rich guy but he decided to go to a shelter because he felt secure there. I think it was a nice experience for him.

Good write, it is amazing how wonderfully friendly people are with each other if there is a bigger problem affecting them all.

      • malubotelho

It is when one leave all the other problems behind
. In a death eminent situation people really live in the now so one really have a mind shift. What is great. Thank you Gold.

Love it when you write about things in our everyday life we take for granted but you find a way of highlighting an individual quality. Here you show us how we all can love each other in the right circumstance. Here you make us question why can't we always be like that. Here you make us think of bigger issues and ask ourselves why. You really do bring out our humanity and show it to us. Thank you. Wonderful reading.

Thanks Dusk. I'm happy to have gone through all that terror with the hurricanes in this paradise that is Florida because it tought me something important' nothing is perfect and one need to pay a price for things one choose. In the and it is like one make exchanges. One place is too cold, another is too hot. Other has hurricane or earthquake, or corrupts like in my country. There is no perfection on earth and one is never safe.
