THE OLD COUPLE

THE OLD COUPLE

(c) 2017 Edward York

The old couple walked hand in hand,

As they moved around the park.

I heard him say they had to rush,

Before it got too dark.

His arm had moved around her waist,

Her body was frail and thin.

It resembled the arm that surrounded her,

Encased in wrinkled skin.

His shoulder was a resting place,

For her to lay her head.

She followed every step he made,

No matter where it led.

Young people quickly passed them by,

without acknowledging them at all.

They didn't see that he held her tight,

To protect her from a fall.

It was inspiring to see a love like that,

In a world where it's so rare.

A love that warms the coldest heart,

And can make a cynic care.

I saw the woman one more time,

As she stood trying to be brave.

I watched the tear trickle down her cheek,

As she stood beside his grave.

Thank you, I appreciate you. I think we all as jockeys of the written word have a much deeper appreciation of matters of the heart.

lasergraph, if this is the result of one of those moods of yours, you should have them more often! That mood helped create an incredibly moving, sad, yet inspiring poem. So well written, I do like your style!

I am governed by moods these fays and a lot of visits to the past. They move me and force me to capture that thought.

The older I get, the more of these events I see. It is bitter sweet, they had many loving moments together but in the end it is never enough time.

A beautiful sad writing. Luck of us if we have someone we love and to be loved by someone till the end of our days. I saw that sweet image. Very touching.
