The Other

Notice of absence from Drewp
I may be absent for a bit. Feeling really low today so really don’t feel like writing. You lot are an amazing bunch of people. I’m going to play guitar and record some music I think. x

The Other

Within the deep subconscious
The Other lies in waiting
If tamed there is evolution of the mind ,
Unembraced, it manifests, hating

Of the tongue or from the pen
It expresses through freudian slips ,
A parapraxis, a desire in writing or prose
A thought subdued , an unconscious wish

The less it appears in everyday life
It’s bitterness and malevolence increase,
For what we hold back that our ego insists
Forms a hole from which springs forth a beast

Ensure that it does not take over
To project it’s dark influence on others
instead face the shadow within ourselves
and control it, so no one need suffer

embrace it as a part of ones being
integrate it into your soul
make the Other conscious,
to be enlightened, capable, whole

Everyone exists with an Other
and in one we accept as a guest
we discover the energy from which it feasts
We then insist on which it rests

Through our Other self the key to our individuality,
is access to the subconscious of our own reality
become one with The Other for artistic abilities,
Take from it powerful, creative agilities

In doing so , we become the exorcists of our innermost demons

  • Comment from author about the poem: I was watching Tin Star with Tim Roth and noticed when the character got drunk he seemed to take on a different persona, a darker side. A lot of artists have induced altered states using drugs etc. as you know to great ends. I decided to alter my state last night and try and tap into my Other self as an experiment. I wrote this poem amongst other things. I believe we all have this other side to us, whatever you want to call it that lies beneath that we can tap into. How many times have you acted completely out of character or heard someone else say they have. As long as it goes away afterwards or you maintain a symbiotic relationship. Everyone knows Jekyll and Hyde, The nutty professor ( Jerry Lewis version of course). I know Im preaching to a choir but I just found it really liberating.

Hi Drewp, I especially like the last verse

"Through our Other self the key to our individuality,
is access to the subconscious of our own reality
become one with The Other for artistic abilities,
Take from it powerful, creative agilities

In doing so , we become the exorcists of our innermost demons"

Sometimes I struggle with more complex poems as I have a simple vocabulary but I try. This last verse made it more clear to me. Great write - Syd

Thanks Syd, I wasn’t my usual self last night when I wrote this. Bit deep. On the other hand I did eat a lot of amazing biscuits afterwards. Thank you. Really appreciate your thoughts. I was going to leave the last part out. When I read it out loud, I felt like William Shatner Signing off from Tales from the Darkside or something.

Very good write and so true. Our 'altered states' are there every day. We put on different masks for every different situation and the only person that knows the real you is oneself or your God if you are a believer.
It could be a fun experiment to try and write in different situations, I do it to some extent as I often see something in a coffee shop and write the words there and then.

Thank you Goldfinch. Im glad that you could relate to it. Enjoy the coffee. Thank you for reading

The Other is in us all at varying degrees isn't it? When we cannot control the other, the risk is great, yet so may be the reward, or perhaps dreaded peril. This write is pure genius. Your gifts are many.
