So many times I have prepared it,
That typical British Sunday lunch.
Roast beef, roast potatoes,
Cabbage and Carrots
With the wondrous Yorkshire Pudding,
All covered in a rich beef and onion sauce.
It was nearly ready,
The beef cooked to perfection
On top of the onions,
Just a trace of red oozing from it,
Left to rest while the veg was cooked.
The oven on full to cook the Yorkshire.
It was time to put it all on the plate,
The veg again cooked perfectly,
The roast potatoes
Crisp outside a soft inside,
The meat gently sliced with respect
And a sharp carving knife,
The gravy prepared from the meat juices
And the onions,
Thickened and flavoured
Was ready.
All was ready
Awaiting the crowning glory,
I opened the oven door
To remove the Yorkshire,
And there it sat
Sagging in the bottom of the dish!
Ruined!!
First time ever!
Why did it not rise?
Then it struck me
I had used the wrong flour,
So it couldn’t rise!
There I was with the Sunday lunch before me,
The meat, the potatoes and veg all perfect,
Covered with the beautiful gravy,
But tears were streaming down my eyes,
As this idiot had failed,
Failed to cook his signature dish,
The Yorkshire Pudding.

- Comment from author about the poem: One of the traditional UK Sunday Dinners is Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. I have cooked this many, many times and the Yorkshire Pudding has been like a work of art but this last Sunday I mad a complete hash of the Yorkshire Pud, I used the wrong flour and instead of rising it just stayed flat in the bottom of the roasting dish. No sympathy is asked for, I made a complete hash of it. But as I have often said our mistakes increase our experience - IT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN!

Cry not dear friend. Even the best occasionally make mistakes. And a mistake is only that, a mistake. Your reputation is untarnished Andy.
Thank you AP, I will try and get over it.
Oh we all make mistakes. It's just that this one, complete with picture has made me very hungry!! Looks fantastic! Good poem!
Thanks Christina, it is a great meal.
Oh dear lol. Good write Gold.
Oh dear indeed, all will be well next time.
Horrible mistake! I see no reason to go on living. But wait ... you learned something. Perhaps that was the point of this doomed exercise.
A reflection of life portrayed in this fine offering, Goldie. Well done, sir.
Thank you Louis, we must all learn from our mistakes as we have done through all our lives.
Oh how we berate ourselves when we err - so easy so to do - but the rest of the meal I am sure was perfection. I can spot 2 veg, pots and gravy making a total of 5 with the pud - one failure in 5 aint that bad in my book - and the meat was slightly rare - what more can you ask for? By the way Morrisons creamed horse radish sauce is the best imho with little bits that explode in the mouth - great stuff, great write .
Thank you Michael, I have made my own horseradish sauce in the past, but I tend to get Colmans Horse radish, I might give Morrison’s a go though.
Goldie, I feel for you! I am cooking most of the meals at home here and once in a while I am in the same position as you were. Everything is fine EXCEPT for that one dish that just did not come out right. You know what? Enjoy what worked and disregard what didn't. Who cares, there are a lot of meals to follow!
Thanks Fred and so true, we had some friends round last night and what I cooked for them was a complete success and one teaches cookery and she was very impressed with what I had created.
There you go! You are one heck of a cook! If I ever get to England, you will have to invite me to a meal. Will bring some Hawaiian chocolate covered macadamia nuts!
I look forward to that meal Fred.
