Infectious Joy.

Goldfinch60

There we were sitting at the table,

My wife and I,

Just chatting drinking our coffee,

When suddenly applause rang out.

I looked across at another table

And a young couple sat there,

The smile from the young lady was infectious.

She was clapping,

Happiness shone from her face,

And all around her.

I smiled at her,

She smiled back, so happy,

So obviously in love

With the man sitting across from her.

I wonder what he said to her

That created such a wondrous reaction,

It was a joy to behold.

The thought did come to me though

It was the first time that I had been applauded,

Just for drinking my coffee.

  • Comment from author about the poem: My wife and I often go to a coffee bar and I see many things there that I have written about, mainly concerning small children but this time it was different. It was a young married couple sitting quite near to us. She started clapping and smiling, I smiled at her and she acknowledged me. As they left she said to us "My husband has just told me something wonderful." Hence this poem and the Johnny Mathis song.

A fine write Gold. I saw children with their parents at a Primary School Fair. Their eyes and faces lit up!

Your well penned poem reminded me that it is the little things in life that make life worth living! And also that we can find beauty and happiness everywhere. Thank you, Goldfinch!

I'd like to catch your coffee-drinking act sometime, if it draws applause like that! Great observation of a happy event, Goldie.

              Thanks Louis.

There is no real skill in it I am sure all could be skillful at it.
