We are taught the thoughts to think
We are taught the words to say
We are taught the things to hate
We are taught the roles to play
It is curious
Given the above
We needn't be taught
Whom, or what,
To love

Indeed, curious!
Not a wasted word, nice work.
Only thing, my penny’s worth, take out your commas, add one after above. Just mho.
S
Thanks, Syn! I think I will add the coma after 'above'. But if I'm going to have any of them, I still like the emphasis they create after 'Whom', and 'What'. Might leave them. Your input is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Good write and very true - we know.
Yes, we very naturally do, Goldie. Thanks!
So true but controversially 'taught' can often be a synonym for 'told' - great work Louis
Yes, we are both taught and told what to do for sure. 'Taught' used in the context of the poem, refers to the societal and parental 'programing' we all undergo.
Thank you so much for your comment, Michael!
Indeed - do we brain wash our children? Vexed thoughts indeed.
A fine reflection Louis.
Many thanks, 'O'.
Louis, I made this a favorite because I want to read it again and again. It's a "thinker" poem that opens up a whole range of questions. What is taught, what is instinct? What comes natural?
Very well written and very intriguing.
Much of what is 'taught', (programed into us) is parental and societal programing inflicted in childhood. We can spend our lives undoing that, if ever.
Thank you so much for your comment and for making it a fav, Fred!
