Gabriel's Greetings

Tune: Branle de L'officiel

('Ding, dong, merrily on high!')

Luke 1 v.26-33

********

Angel Gabriel was sent

From God, to Nazareth went

Message to virgin Mary

She would bear the Christ-child, see

Chorus

Glory! The light of the world is here

Glory! Worship Him with lowly fear

Hail, highly favoured one she

Was, and the message it be

That she should conceive a son

All by the Spirit's work done - Chorus

He be born of David's line

Blessed you among women fine

Not to fear for she had found

Favour with God, praise resound - Chorus

Her son to be named JESUS

He would take our sins from us

He the Son of the Highest

Comes to earth, heavenly guest - Chorus

The Lord God shall give Him sure

The throne of David e'ermore

He shall reign, endless kingdom

Of the like there shall be none - Chorus

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 7.7.7.7. metre, 'extended' in the Chorus. Title, sort of means 'official dance' - a branle (I googled that!).
