THE CHINESE BRUSH (1)

Michael Edwards

Simples strokes of the brush

image captured

A skill passed down through the dynasties

A frame work formed by a set of principles

skills acquired

An artists road to self-expression

Each stroke mirrors the artists mind

Reflecting Ch’i and energy

Composition and colour, strokes and shapes

Through pressure in directed strokes

With form and space which complement each other

Each image viewed condensed in time

Avoiding lines in symmetry

A creative work not an imitation of someone else’s work

Assimilating principles

Rhythmic skills of mastery

The brush made of hair of wolf and goat

The ink stick made of soot and gum

Hsuan paper from the Sandlewood tree

brush held upright in the hand

The brush applied – don’t hesitate.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I've just written a poem about Chinese Brush Painting and thought, just for a change, I'd post the different stages I went through in writing it. I don't normally keep the different stages - I work on the poem on the computer changing things round, adding, deleting etc but on this occasion I cut and posted the stages separately to demonstrate how I work. Today I'm posting the first stage being the gathering of ideas as they popped into my head - just a list really. From this list I begin to sort out a structure using the ideas and discarding others - tomorrow I'll post the next stage....... As I never start at the beginning and simply work my way through I thought at least some of you might be interested to see how I work.

    This will be good.

I have tried to do calligraphy with brushes in the Chines style and failed miserably, I'll stick to dip pens.

You going to China to get new brushes, or does the Co-op in the High Street stock them?! 🙂

            • Michael Edwards

Yes it's in the Co-op on the oriental isle next to five spices .

Had to look back to this posting to see the first stages your mind made in both writing and painting - a most interesting journey for readers to make with you Michael - thanks for sharing the ways to succeed with the rhythmic skills of Chinese Brushwork

If I understood it correctly, you are equating the art of painting to the formation of poem.

Both requiring an image before the brush touches the paper, or pen the pages.

              Once again, pardon my shuffling,

I'll excuse yours if you will excuse mine lol
