GAFF ~ is a faux pas or blunder

ORIGIN ~ French ~ a boat hook or blunder

In English "slang" GAFF is also a word for a HOME ! 

 

HAUTE CUISINE ~ High Class Cooking ~ but NOT

Restaurant in the Sky ~ but CUISINE HOT ! ~ French

 

ICONOCLAST ~ Attack on Cherished beliefs

ORIGIN ~ Icon = Idol ~ Clan (Greek) to break !

 

JARGON ~ language of Science and the favoured few 

ORIGIN ~ French ~ to TWITTER ~ To Wit - To Woo !

The call of Barn Owls ~ To Wit (female) to Woo (Male)

      Yes, 'tis educational on 'ere! thanks Brian. They clasted those icons in a blitz centuries ago! Somewhen it was. I was probably there in person, but ages ago!
      Not that I'm against icons, as long we don't worship statues.

        Thanks STEVE ~ I agree ~ Statues etc have no place in a Reformed Church ~ The Church of Scotland is the example of an Image & Icon Free Church ! Luther approved of them as Aids to Devotion ~ and they still abound in Lutheran Churches ! In the 21st C (A Century of literacy & enlightenment are they still necessary ? Yours BRIAN

          Thanks Brian. Some 'free' churches for example, may just have a cross, while some fairly 'high' churches may have lots of statues. I can see how they can be aids to devotion, if we don't worship them. How much of it comes under 'graven images' though? I was sentimental - not the best guide to go by! I saw a statue of St Giles and a hind. She, the hind, used to always stay with him in his lifetime.
