Life can only be understood backwards.
Unfortunately, it must be lived forward.
Kierkegaard
We look at what we did and didn’t do
Trying to make sense of our past
Separating the wrong from the true
Seeking our deeper self at last
Wondering what the future will bring
Not sure of how to go from here to there
Fussing about every little thing
Asking ourselves if we should dare
To break into uncharted land
To take that less traveled way
Without any plans or maps at hand
Live our lives just day to day
We don’t see where we are going
By looking backwards all along
The secret lies in really knowing
What is right and what is wrong
We live looking forward
Armed with knowledge from the past

Very true that knowledge from the past has given us the experience to move forward with less and less trepidation.
Thank you Goldfinch! I guess the older we get the less trepidation we have.
Well said and well written Fred.
