BRIAN & ANGELA

HOW TO READ A POEM ?

1.   You don't read it like a book or newspaper !

2.   Read it out loud if you can ........

3.   In this way you will feel Rhyme & Resonance

4.   Poetry often had hidden meaning .........

5.   So read it again and again !

6.   Read it out loud to someone ~ ask their opinion

7.   If you like a poem ~ copy and file it for the future

8.   I find your poems give me ideas for new poems !

9.   Note the structure of the poems ~ Ideally ........

10. A Poem should have Rhyme & Rhythm & Reason !

Great advice which we all know but often forget - well put together Brian. By the way it was a new bottle of port and it's excellent !!

HI MICHAEL ~ Pleased you enjoyed your PORT ~ A glass always clams a storm ! Please your enjoyed the LIST ~ Yours BRIAN

I can do rhyme and reason. Rhythm is tricky though!

        • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks SB ~ Rhyme & Reason are equally important as Rhythm ~ which can be elusive. It is achieved by counting syllables and have a \"syllabus pattern\" for each verse ~ verses are also important ~ to give a poem structure and the reader (reciter) breathing space !

I have a DOG his name is BEN (8 syllables)
We like go walkies now and then (8)
But when it rains we stay indoors (8)
Go walkies round and round the floors (8)

See how nice that is to read and recite because all the lines have EIGHT SYLLABLES ~ Its called iambic pentameter ~ OK Yours BRIAN

          • Shadowbox15

I thought iambic pentameter was 10 syllables!

            • BRIAN & ANGELA

Well spotted FRIEND ~ I meant IAMBIC TETRAMETER which is in fact EIGHT (2 x 4) PENTAMETER is in fact TEN (2 x 5) Thanks BRIAN

You simply confused me. I’m only in grade ten, mate.

Should be printed out and hung on the wall by every aspiring poet!
                Well said, Brian!

Thanks FRED ~ Rhythm to me is very important ~ Poetry is an ORAL MEDIUM ! Lots of Poets on MPS have never been taught about RHYTHM. We studied Shakespeare at Secondary School and learned that it was the RHYTHM that made it beautiful to read & remember and relatively easy to perform !

"Friends Romans Countrymen lend me your ears
I come to bury Caesar not to praise him !
The evil that Men do lives after them
The good is oft interred within their bones
So let it be with Caesar !"

Thanks for your comment ~ BRIAN
