The Green Flash

FredPeyer

With my arm around her shoulders

My skin touching her sun warmed body

Feeling the rhythmic beat of her heart

Her leg slung carelessely over mine

We sit on a rock facing the ocean

Watching the sun embracing the horizon

Melting into the distant waters

Wondering if we would see the elusive green flash

That last sign of a dying disappearing sun

A wink that tells us not to worry

She will be back again tomorrow

Pulling her closer we kiss languidly

Content with each other and the certainty

That tomorrow will be another beautiful day

  • Comment from author about the poem: The 'green flash' does exist. I saw it twice. Once when working on Johnston Atoll, an island so small that when standing on the roof of the building I was working in, I could turn around 360 degrees and see nothing but ocean. The second time in Hawaii. The horizon has to be completely free of clouds. When the sun sinks into the ocean, immediately before disappearing there is a very short flash of green. For a second or two, that upper rim of the sun will appear green in color. It's a brief flash of the color green – the legendary green flash. It's really quite exciting to see, especially if you've been looking for one. It's said that once you've seen a green flash, you'll never again go wrong in matters of the heart.

Just curious, Fred ... what were you drinking when you saw the 'green flash'? Nice write!

        • FredPeyer

I had a 'Sex on the beach', a great Hawaii cocktail. Beats Pina Colada anytime! Love your comment though! And it WAS green, not pink, or blue, or yellow....green! Won't tell you what happened after the green flash! 🙂

Being that I'm on the east coast I'll have to look for it at sunrise. I've seen many sunrises, but never noticed a green flash. But now you've made me curious and next time I'm out taking morning shots with my Canon I'll be looking for it. Great write Fred.

Thanks AP, I don't know if this phenomenon also happens at sunrise. Check it out on the internet. I typed in 'Sun green flash' and got the explanation for it as well as many pictures.

Very good write Fred. I have seen many colours when the sun sets but never the green flash. Isn't nature wonderful.

Thanks Goldie! Some sunsets are simply gorgeous. Some of them look like these gory velvet paintings from the 60's! 🙂

Great picture painted in my mind
                  Transforming for your rhythm
As the sun warms my face
I thank you for the lovely vision
