The Polititian

FredPeyer

He said he cared

About us

About the homeless

About the elderly

Did he really?

He showed plans

To build housing

To fix roads and bridges

To lower taxes for the poor

Were they real?

He visited

Old people homes

Hospitals

Schools

What for?

It was only for show

TV news sound bites

Newspaper coverage

Twitter followers

Did it work?

To get re-elected

He lied

He cheated

He deceived

He got re-elected!

How much longer will we pay

For a seat in this circus

Before the clowns make us realize that

It is all mirrors and smoke

Seems so - sometimes, anyway. I'm not on any political side.
I will leave a political 'joke' to Goldie, that he knows. Won't pinch it from him!

    • FredPeyer

Thanks orchie, I just happened to read something not so flattering about a local politician and had to let go of some steam! There are obviously honest and well-meaning elected people, but for my taste there are much too many who are not honest and mainly out for themselves.

So very true Fred, so very true. There is a word or words for them that I think that you would use in swiss german if I am not mistaken!

      • FredPeyer

Thank you Goldie! I just spent the past few minutes trying to figure out what words you mean, but cannot remember. Maybe I have been away from Switzerland too long (46 years). Help me out here. You can always write to me through my mailbox here.

Why are people fooled so easily? That is the underlying problem isn't it! There are political "faces" out there that are like roadmaps as far as their integrity is concerned....... it's so disheartening........

        • FredPeyer

How come Trump got elected???? I usually stay away from politics and religion, but made an exception here. Am not talking about any particular party though, just the fact that there seem to be so many elected people who should never have been elected.

          • Lorna

Oh please - the very mention of his name sets me off food. I can hardly look at his face. And I know - it's not just about one party necessarily although this Republican bunch are enablers and abettors....... their only hope is to stand up against him for their own sakes. Oh dear, politics..... sorry.

There are many genuine politicians who are dedicated and have their constituents at heart even though you may not always agree with their political beliefs. Trouble is so many soon get drawn into the sad reality of how politics work once elected. A great write which I can relate to.

            • FredPeyer

Thanks Michael, you are right, they may start out all fresh and eager, but soon realize that in order to get re-elected they have to play the game. And that game can get quite ugly.
One of my pet peeves is how they 'smuggle' provisions into a bill that have nothing to do with the purpose of the bill, but are compromises to individual policy makers in order to get the bill passed. That is something I think should be made illegal.

              • Michael Edwards

I can't speak with any great authority but from afar it seems to me that in the States the problem is exacerbated by where politicians get their financial support from which then influences their decision making (gun laws for example). Not really true democracy.

Long has it been since I attended a circus, although they are still out there. Those kind of clowns are only self-centered fools who care nothing for the viewers they perform for. Great poem Fred.

Thank you AP, and thank you for getting right to the heart of this poem!

The clowns make it so easy.

Nice angry writing. On this side of the pond we used to have a good politician. He believed in one thing only, he agitated the mainstream so much that their mocking turned into adopting his policy. After his goal was finally achieved he quit and left politics. Didn't try to bullshit his way into other issues he knew little about like all the other politicians... he just walked away. Chap is called Nigel Farage and love him or hate him he has to be admired for his single mindedness and tenacity.

                    • FredPeyer

Thank you da! Please see my answer to tepo. Unfortunately I do not know too much about Nigel Farage, so cannot offer any opinion.

                      Fred,
I’m curious about the title of your poem.

                      A fine write indeed!

In my household, discussing politics (and religion) usually lead to a volatile discussion! Its conclusion is usually...LET’S AGREE TO DISAGREE!

                      ~Laura~

                      • FredPeyer

Thank you Laura, for reading and commenting!
RE title: By calling this poem 'The Polititian' I wanted to keep it away from any particular person. This poem is about the system, about the abuses, not some particular elected official. Whenever there is a group, there will be a bad apple or two, that is understood. But when the system is set up to maybe not only allow, but encourage this kind of behavior, then the system must be changed. See my answers to Michael, tepo, scrambled letters comments.
But this is a forum for writers and I don't want to discuss either politics or religion. Like you say, let's agree to disagree and concentrate on the writing! Love your comment, Laura!

                          Fred,
I was actually referring to the usage of the word POLITITIAN...

                          ~Laura~

                          • FredPeyer

Yeah, you are right, that t should have been a c. But hey, English is my fourth language, and I have to make a few mistakes to show that! 🙂

                            • Laura🌻

                              Not really a mistake!

It was used some time ago! It is now obsolete but it’s not wrong! I thought you used it to make a point!

I’m only extra aware of words because many rules were pounded into my head when I had to learn English in a private school!

                              Sorry about that!😌

                            • Joseph M Marion

Love this poem and way you write
