Charitable Donation

Accidental Poet

Charitable Donation

Yesterday I gave a donation

To a charitable organization

And I heard within my head

A connection I always dread

You’ll always hear it

Whenever you’re near it

Follow the donation instruction

To receive a tax deduction

And suddenly it occurred to me

So selfish one can be

How charitable is it if it depends

On what to me it sends

Of what has this world become

To what unruly sum

To offer a charitable gift

But then say only if

A deal can be arranged

For a tax deduction in exchange

When I decide to give

My conscience and I can live

The reward is in my smile

And that's just my style

      You’re absolutely right, AP!
It should be no strings attached...like unconditional love!
      An EXCELLENT write...
      and I totally agree!

Thanks Laura. Some people can't comprehend the meaning of the word "Gift".

      • Lorna

Yup.... there's greed again! Long ago my mother stopped going to a particular church because they started sending "bills" for the amount pledged....... I can still remember her outrage....

        • Accidental Poet

Well THAT'S going a bit too far. What's next, they take it from your paycheck before it's even in your hands?

          • Lorna

            I don't go so I don't ask.............

Written with feeling - and oh to get a tax refund - super write AP

            • Accidental Poet

Thanks Michael. This is what goes through my mind whenever I give to a charity. To me, it doesn't feel like a donation if I'm getting something in return. It just seems to defy the meaning of donation.

Is this how you mean it? In UK we can tick a 'Gift Aid' box if paying enough tax (usually if employed). The charity can then claim 25p extra for every £1 donated by us.

orchi, I've absolutely no idea what you just said.

                • orchidee

That's how it is in UK anyway. Tick a 'Gift Aid' box on the donation form if we pay tax. Then the charities can claim back 25p extra for each £1 we donate to them.
