WILD LAND.

Fay Slimm.

Wild Land.

Who visits this wild land sees,
in the vision-bright eyes of birds and beasts
where grass, wind-bent
and weather-dried clings to high cliffs
for dear life as granite shelters
no more than hovering feather and rabbits
who stay close to their hides.
Where eagles keep day-watch for movement
in heather of bobbed tails, or white
hopping ears in habitual
cocked wariness then like a knife of forked
light the predators fall.
Fern-fattened fur leaps or freezes
in prey-fright,
eyes glaze and stay frozen as falcon attacks.
Such is the dictum
of law and order among creatures
living in real wilderness
and who persist in a fierce kind of freedom.
Who seeks for behaviour
in those being true to themselves, owns
that this island has places
where, human-less, only nature controls.

Good to have your comment Michael - these lands are worth describing with apt words or better still visiting to see with a poet's eye the beauty of wild nature.

When I was young the wilds of nature did not scare me - I loved it! Now that I'm older I am more aware of her wrath and stay closer to the garden - but even there the hawks get my little birds and I find feathers under the bird feeder in the mornings........ We are here at her mercy! Lots of open space in your wonderful poem Fay.............

Yes I agree Lorna - we can see wild behaviour in our very gardens at times - - the sparrow hawk visits our outdoor canary flight sometimes and frightens the poor little creatures while he sits and glares before deciding to fly away. Glad you liked the read of wild behaviour in places where humans rarely visit,

A great write, my dear Fay!
I promise to not seek this human-less island and let nature continue on its course and be what it was meant to be! A very enjoyable and eye-opening read!

            A beautiful and truthful statement...

“Such is the dictum of law and order among creatures living in real wilderness and who persist in a fierce kind of freedom.”

So pleased that important statement caught your attention dear Laura - - - I was hoping it would be noticed for the order which wild behaviour lives by in these wilderness places. Thank you for your thoughts on the poem.
