Down to the shop I walk
To get the daily paper,
In the shop I see Peg,
A near neighbour,
With whom I’m acquainted.
We chat as we pass,
But today we walk up the road together.
She is a lady of many years
But always good to talk to.
As we pass my neighbour’s house
His immaculate old mini is in the drive.
“I remember them” she said,
“The mini is a very special car to me,
Because when I was young
I can remember being in one
With my boyfriend,
And my legs hanging out the windows!”

- Comment from author about the poem: I have known Peg for many years and we only ever chat in the street as we walk down to the shop. I was quite stunned when she said to me that she remembers being in a mini in her youth "with my legs sticking out the window". The song Blue Velvet is a hit from 1963 which would be about the time when this would have happened.

Swoon! Well, so much for 'We wouldn't have done such things in our days!' said by some older folk. A fine write Gold.
Thanks Orchi, Oh yes they could!
remembrance ,
and a song like
no other.
Thanks op, much appreicated.
Ah bless her - we all have memories which seem at odds with our passing years - enjoyed this Andy.
Bless her indeed, yes we all have memories which we keep to ourselves.
Whoo Hooo for Peg! May she never grow up........ life should always be riding in a mini with legs sticking out the windows!
Very true Lorna, thank you.
Well we were all young yesterday werent we. Great that you friend has fond memories of her youth. A time of youth, vigour, exploration and excitement! Old though she (we) has become, there is the young lady still inside her behind those wisened wrinkles. Really uplifting read from you today.
P.S. The song was used as the title music for a film 'Blue Velvet' a few years back starring dennis hopper, well worth a watch.
Yes she is an amazing lady but I never thought she would have said this to me.
The song was in the film but the title music for the film was a composition by Angelo Badalamenti, it is a very good film that I saw some time ago, I must watch it again. The whole music for the film is quite amazing.
Andy,
Epic...great label for that great song...
BLUE VELVET...
love that song by Bobby Vinton!
Your wonderful poem has reminded me of some of my mini skirts young years! A blast of a time with my long haired boyfriend...who is now my husband!
