He had a drinking problem,
But it became resolved,
And he became reformed,
A reformed alcoholic.
He told his story to me.
“I lost a whole decade
Lost it to cheap whisky.
But luck was with me
As the decade I lost
Was the nineteen-eighties.”

Thanks ANDY ~ A lovely tribute to the MAN IN BLACK voted the "Best County Country Singer" of the 20th C ~ some accolade. I give talks on Johnny & June all dressed in Black and using my JC CD collection ~ A great Poet and a great interpreter of Songs ~ One of America's Finest ~ AMEN ~ Thanks for sharing ~ BRIAN Please check SUMMER HOLIDAY ~ Thanks B !
I have all JC's recorded work except some of the compilations of recordings I already have. Wonderful singer and his life with June was superb.
Odd isn't it how one persons drab decade is anothers 'days of my life' period.
Certainly true. The poem is based on a fictional character but I have actually heard Clarissa Dixon Wright (One of the two Fat Ladies Cooks) say that she had lost the eighties through her drinking.
A sense of lost time comes to the fore very clearly in this poignant verse Goldie. A touching write.
Thank you Fay. Most kind.
