We sat around the table
Drinking our coffee,
Chatting,
Looking at photos’
When our daughter spotted one.
She said to our Granddaughter,
“Is that at the French Restaurant,
The one in Birmingham,
That you went to last week?”
Our Granddaughter said,
“Oh no,
That’s the one in Paris”.
My wife and I looked on
Astounded,
She had said it as though
Popping out to a restaurant in Paris
Was an everyday happening.
How small the world is,
From when WE were young.

- Comment from author about the poem: This really happened, there were four of us, my wife, daughter and one of our Granddaughters just chatting and looking at photographs, our daughter knew that our Granddaughter had been to a french restaurant in Birmingham (she is at University in Birmingham) and saw a picture of out Granddaughter and friends at a restaurant and though it was that one. Our Granddaughter replied that it was one in Paris as though this was an everyday occurrence in her life. This world is becoming so small nowadays.

A fine write Gold.
Thanks Orchi.
It's so incredibly small. I can recall my parents hardly ventured beyond Southgate and when they took a holiday in Ireland it was as if they had discovered another world. Bit different now - I have travelled all over the world and have an apartment in Cyprus - I know the island like the back of my hand and feel at home there as soon as I step off the plane.
It certainly is, we never travelled outside of England, but it is so easy nowadays.
The reaches of this generation astound me too dear Goldi - - they think nothing of travel to the ends of the earth and feel the world is thier oyster - but hopefully the young look inside at core values and choose to adjust to others' needs. A deep and thoughtful verse here my friend.
My elder Grandaughter wenrpt to Everest Base Camp three years ago and the following year she went around the USA staying with friends she met at Evesrest. She is now in Beijing for a year teaching English as a foreign language! The last time I went in holiday I went to Skye and that can be reached by a bridge!
I have never felt the desire to travel outside of UK.
Having written that i sat and thought about it. I love to travel in UK but no desire at all to go elsewhere.
Certainly the world would appear to have shrunk since the jet airliner was invented. Oh, and the chunnel.
I too like the UK, I could quite happily live in the Yorkshire Dales. We very nearly did at one point, there was a Tea Shop for sale in Leyburn and we seriously thought about buying it, it never happened.
I rekkon you would have been writing more poetry there and i bet you'd sell your poetry too. Now there's a thought. Do you ever daydream about 'what ifs' and 'if onlys?' It would be interesting reading a poem about such thoughts of serving the tourists with cream teas and a south midlands accent. Well i can picture it anyway.
I have never felt the desire to travel outside of UK.
Having written that i sat and thought about it. I love to travel in UK but no desire at all to go elsewhere.
Certainly the world would appear to have shrunk since the jet airliner was invented. Oh, and the chunnel.
It would be worse than that da, I was brought up in the Medway Towns in Kent and these south Midlanders reckon I am a cockney.
I'll say! Just a short hop to what might have been occupied Paris and Nazis! 84 Avenue Foch and the Gestapo........ (why did that pop into my head - God knows).........
Andy,
A fine write I can relate to.
I enjoyed the video very much!
Yes, this world is getting smaller every day!
Although I’ve done a lot of traveling myself, my two children hop on airplanes as if they’re going grocery shopping! They are incredible! God Bless them!
As a matter of fact, my son told me a few days ago that he’s going golfing at St. Andrews...and my daughter was in Prague last month for a singing guest appearance!

Yes it is amazing what the youngsters do without even thinking about it.
A lovely read!
Thank you Christina, much appreciated.
