We were sitting chatting,
My Granddaughter and I,
When she asked a question.
“If you were to study again,
Would you still study science?”
What a profound question.
My life started in science,
It was my dream at school,
I wanted nothing else
And a scientist I became.
It served me well
For many years,
And was the foundation
On which my life was built.
Looking back now
From my elder years
My life has changed.
Although music has been with me
As the years went by,
Music became more meaningful.
Then I found art,
The appreciation of wonderful works
Assailed my soul.
The final change came to me
Late on in my existence,
As I found I could write words,
Words on a page,
These words became so important.
My life was filled
With music,
With art,
With words,
And always with love.
So would I study science again?
Surely the answer would be no
As the arts of the world
Now held such a strong hold
Over my life.

- Comment from author about the poem: An interesting question from my Granddaughter made me think. As you all know I am so keen on music and I thought I would bring a piece to you that always brings me to tears even if I am just listening to it and this performance is so very emotional.

It really makes me reflect on my own life. But I wouldn't do anything different, because my past is what makes me who I am today.
very true, science was the foundation of my life but at my age I now look at things differently, it is from the experiences I have had in my life.
that is also true.We come from different times and things have changed ALOT even since I was a kid growing up in the 90's
there you go!

freeing the being is
seeing not fleeing.
I do not know what I mean by this.

Freeing and seeing are certainly part of my life's experience.
ha! ha! ha!
Yes these things calm the soul and is an avenue for us to express those deep emotions that within us lives and grows. I enjoy your writings. Thanks for sharing.
Thank You H, you are most kind.
Thanks ANDY ~ Love this ARIA and all OPERA ~ An experience closed to so many ~ like Ballet and other classical ART FORMS. Your answer intrigues me ! As you know I am a Scientist and I am also well versed in the Visual and Audio Arts. So I consider myself an "Educated Young Man" However most People are ignorant of Science and Mathematics and Languages. In my experience it is relatively easy (through the Open University etc ~ I am an OU Graduate) to study the Arts & Literature & Languages but much more difficult to Study Mathematics & the Physical Sciences. In the 21st C the truly educated People are the Scientists. So my advice to Young People would be "Study Science & Technology & Maths" while you are Young and assimilate the Arts as you Mature ! It is a distinct advantage to be born and live in a City and Study in a City Based University ~ All Human life is there and it broadens ones Mind & Horizons ~ AMEN Your BROTHER in Science & the Arts ~ BRIAN
Thank you Brian, I too like opera, I do struggle with Wagner a bit but I am getting there. As I said in my poem science was the foundation of my life but the arts became the final structure.
Now you've found your path to freedom Andy! And we are the lucky ones for it! By the way
Thank you Lorna, so very true.
Now you've found your path to freedom Andy! And we are the lucky ones for it! By the way my Dad knew so much about and loved classical music and it was always in the house - especially on Sundays! He loved Joan Sutherland - Lucia Di Lammermoor was his favorite....... you've probably heard this bit but here in case you haven't - with Pavarotti: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLYWu1mI52A - play it for Dad!
Hi Lorna, yes I had heard this but always worth hearing again. I hope your Dad was looking over my shoulder while I was playing.
Thanks Andy.......... He probably was - and his hands were waving in the air to the music..........
Andy,
You are a man of many talents! Your love for the arts is apparent in your writing and in the musical pieces you choose to accompany your poetry! It is always a pleasure to read your writings and listen to the musical pieces you choose to share!
Thank you!
