THE PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS ~ A SONNET !

BRIAN & ANGELA

THE PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS ~ 1869 ~ PERFECTION

MENDELEEV  published Periodic

Table of the Elements in 1869

Others tried before ~ others afterwards

To Write & Refine ~ but it was PERFECT !

Horizontal progression from METAL ~

SODIUM to NON-METAL ~ CHLORINE

Which combined to form SALT ~ NaCl

And vertical columns (GROUPS) which contained

Families of ELEMENTS like HALOGENS

FLUORINE ~ CHLORINE ~ BROMINE ~ IODINE and

ALKALI METALS ~ Li ~ Na ~ K !

He recognised TRANSITION ELEMENTS

And left gaps for UNKNOWN ELEMENTS

And even predicted their PROPERTIES !

Thanks for visiting ~ comments welcome ~ Love B & A XOX

The PERIODIC TABLE of ELEMENTS now unifies all 92

natural elements ~ HYDROGEN to URANIUM and also

acomodates the TRANSURANIC ELEMENTS of which one

No. 101 is named MENDELEEVUM. I love to teach students

(and SENIORS !) the History of Chemistry and the People

involved !  MENDELEEV is a Pure Genius because we have

to remember he constructed his AMAZING TABLE when

only 63 elements were known and before the discovery

of ELECTRON (1897) PROTON (1909) & NEUTRON (1932) and Noble

Gasses (1901) which form a complete GROUP (HELIUM ~ NEON

etc). MENDELEEV based his TABLE on ascending  ATOMIC

WEIGHTS it is now based on ATOMIC NUMBERS ~ The

number of PROTONS in the NUCLEUS. One of the lovely

stories about MENDELEEV is that he travelled from MOSCOW

to PARIS in 1906 and knocked on the CURIES DOOR and said

"Hello I'm MENDELEEV I've come to thanks you for discovering

RADIUM ~ which I called EKA-BARIUM ~ and filling in another

GAP in my PERIODIC TABLE ~ Beautiful ~ AMEN !

This POEM is presented as a BLANK VERSE (iambic pentameter)

4 7 3 Sonnet. It's dedicated to the Genius of DIMITRI MENDELEEV

Thank you for the lesson Brian but I had enough of the Periodic Table at School and college.
I know that in our jobs as chemists we had to learn about the periodic table but whenever did we ever refer to it in our work. We obviously had to be aware of what the elements were and did, but many of the newcomers that came into work in the industry with the super class honours degrees had no idea of how to do chemistry in the world of work so I have to teach them again.
Are qualifications meaningful in the work environment?

Oops excuse me pinching the 'reply' spot.
Well, some places only take graduates' or 'educated to 'A' level. Should that be so? I mean, they're not allowed to specify male or female unless in exceptions. But can they change a light bulb, degree or not?!
I suppose employers have particular needs. They want the 'right person' for the job.

They may be well educated but have no idea of how to live or work. One of my school friends was very, very bright he went to Cambridge University having gained "A" levels n Pure Maths, Applied Maths, Chemistry and Physics all at A grade and three with distinctions but as far as common sense was concerned he struggled to cross the road!

Oohh you're a child in a sweetie shop with all that periodic stuff! I can't even say some names - mendel-wotsit, etc.

        • BRIAN & ANGELA

Well STEVE ~ Concepts like the PERIODIC TABLE ~ Atomic & Molecular Structure & Systematic Organic Nomenclature do make Chemistry easier to Learn & Understand ! I have studied Chemistry for 25 Years and have grasped the basic principles ! Thanks ~ like all Academic Subjects it is a challenge. I am fortunate that ANGELA (see her comment) also loves and understands Chemistry our Relationship is EXOTHERMIC. Yours A & B !

Ooh, a chemical reaction that releases energy by light or heat. Maybe tell me no more. I might swoon with the 'heat' bit! heehee. Ohh it's too much for me on here, with words like nomenclature, especially this time of day (morning!).

            Mio Caro Amico BRIAN,
            Buongiorno!
            Thanks for the memories...NOT!!
In high school, I had to memorize all the element names and their symbols! Torturous!!
This write is a good reminder as to what to prioritize in our daily life!
            Grazie!
Abbracci e Baci per te ed Angela...
            ~Laura~

CAIO LAURA ~ Nostra Amica Preciosa ! A mi piache que La Tavola Periodica di Elementi brought back mixed emotions ! It is its simplicity & elegance that always grabs me. I have a big one on the wall of my Flat ~ always a talking point ! In Chemistry Exams in the UK we now issue the Students with a copy of the PT ~ no need to memorise ! We live in a Technological Society and an Ignorant Man in the 21st C is one who does not understand basic Science & Technology. We should never take Science & the History of Science for granted ~ AMEN Abbracci e Baci per tu de Angela e Brian XOXOX

You are so knowledgeable. A marvelous scientist I am sure. Enjoyed the write very much. Thanks for sharing!

GOOD MORNING ADELE ! As a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry ~ I have a duty to propagate Science in the Community and this is one way of doing it ! Mendeleev is very famous ~ not only for WHAT he did but for WHEN he did it. It is the SPECIFIC STRUCTURE of the ATOMS of each individual element which dictates the Chemical & Physical properties of that element and that was not clarified until over 60 years later in 1932 with the discovery of the NEUTRON. Mendeleev instinctively knew there must be a PATTERN (The Elegant periodic Table) He just didn't know why ~ now we do ~ AMEN. Pleased you liked it ~ we are on very sacred ground ! Periodic Hugs ~ BRIAN & ANGELA @@@@@@@

Filled with gratitude to such as the genius Mendeleev who centuries back brought to our attention the glory and value of elements and so interestingly written through your researched efforts. Thank you again Brian for making readers like me more aware of the marvels in created gifts.

                • BRIAN & ANGELA

THANKS FAY ~ BASICALLY WE ARE ALL ELEMENTAL ! Each one of the 92 natural elements plays a part in each of our lives ~ the AIR we breath ~ the FOOD we eat ~ the LIQUIDS we drink and the materials we use. Being a Russian and a Philosopher ~ Mendeleev reasoned the evidence of 63 elements he had (all different but some with familial similarities ?) there must be a pattern or a matrix that linked them all. It took him three years of hard reasoning and data collecting and in 1869 he had the confidence to present his PERIODIC TABLE of ELEMENTS (gaps and all) to the SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY ! It was so unique and perfect that nobody questioned it and he received Worlwide acclaim for his Scientific Genius & Insight ~ just as CRICK and WATSON did over 80 years later for their indisputable structure of DNA. The fact that Mendeleev did not fully understand why the 63 known Elements (when arranged in order of their Atomic Weights) fitted into such a perfect MATRIX makes it all the more amazing that he had the temerity to publish it when he did. A little earlier NEWLAND'S LAW of OCTAVES (a similar concept to Menedeleevs) was published and he was ridiculed ~ He PUBLISHED but He still PERISHED. The Scientific World is very cruel and very cynical ! My work has been scrutinised but I have always been vindicated ~ AMEN ~ Yours as ever BRIAN

GOOD EVENING SWEETHEART ~ Thursday morning here. Love the tribute to Mendeleev and his Famous Periodic Table. As you know I did A-level Chemistry, Human Biology & Behavioural Science to qualify study Physiotherapy. I loved CHEMISTRY and its History and the fabulous characters like Mendeleev, Kekule and Marie Curie. The Periodic Table is mega-elegant and iconic only GOD could have designed it and He revealed it to Dimitri in a DREAM ~ Amen. I had a big psychedelic PT on my wall in College. My roommate (an Artist) thought it was very Poetic & Artistic & Practical like the map of the London Underground she had on her wall! Love the feedback and your comments. See you SOON: All my LOVE ANGELA XXXX
