A Plethora Of Poetry Awards – Poetry News Roundup September 20th

Today in our poetry news round up, we bring together a selection of articles about recent poetry awards.

National Book Award for Poetry Shortlist

The shortlist for this years National Book Award for Poetry has been announced by the National Book Foundation. On 3rd October, they will be announcing the finalists in all of the categories of the awards.

The longlist includes a selection of poets who are at all different stages of their careers, with one of the names on the list having been a previous finalist and longlist candidate. There are three National Endowment for the Arts Fellows and a Guggenheim Fellow on the list as well as poets who have been previously recognised for a range of different awards including a William Carlos Williams Award. This year, the longlist for the award is an incredibly varied one, which includes topics such as migration, the history of the Chamoru people,  and multiculturalism.

This year the National Book Award for Poetry received a total of 295 entries. The panel of judges is made up of 5 individuals who will be making their decisions completely independently from the award committee. The winners in this and all of the other categories will be announced on 15th November at a live event.

$40,000 Poetry Prize Celebrates Female Poets

The Helen Anne Bell Poetry Bequest Award, the richest Australian Poetry Prize, available. This is an award aimed at female poets and the prize recipient will be someone whose poetry collection is reflective of the culture of Australia. Vagabond Press will publish the collection which is chosen as the winning entry. In addition, the winner will receive a cash prize.

This is a biennial prize, presented by the University of Sydney and is funded by a former students bequest to the University.  This year marks the fifth prize that the award will be given and the generous prize fund, which was $7000 until its increase in 2019, is the richest prize for poetry in Australia.

The award places no restriction on the subject matter of submissions and stipulates only that each collection is between fifty to eighty pages in length and looks at Australian culture. The judging panel is made up of three female poets who are all distinguished Australians.

Helen Anne Bell was a mature student at the university, graduating with a BA, MA and a Postgraduate diploma. She worked extensively in the field of Aboriginal Education and Adult Literacy; she was also a published poet.

American Academy Announces Several Awards

The Academy of American Poets has presented a lifetime achievement award to the poet Afaa Michael Weaver. The Wallace Stevens Award was just one of the prizes for American poets that that was announced by the Academy this week.

Other awards included the Academy of American Poets Fellowship, which was awarded to Major Jackson and includes a residency at the T.S. Eliot summer house.  The Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize and the Raiziss de Palchi Fellowship. There were also a number of smaller awards for individual poems from up and coming young poets.
