Could Man Be Drunk Forever

A. E. Housman

 Next Poem

Could man be drunk for ever
With liquor, love, or fights,
Lief should I rouse at morning
And lief lie down of nights.

But men at whiles are sober
And think by fits and starts,
And if they think, they fasten
Their hands upon their hearts.

"Could Man Be Drunk Forever" really got me thinking about life's distractions versus moments of sober reflection. The blend of joy, escapism, and self-examination is very intriguing. Does anyone else find it a bitter-sweet reminder of the human condition?

I remember first reading this poem back in high school. It still has that same powerful resonance. This bit of poetry really puts life into perspective, doesn't it? Makes you wonder how much of our lives we spend trying to drown out the sobering thoughts of reality. Do you guys think it's suggesting we’d be happier drunk on life's distractions than to sober up and face the hard truths?
