Captured in Art

Goldfinch60

The artist sat in the corner,

Painting a new creation,

Around her hung her work.

As soon as I entered her space

I was stopped,

Stopped by a painting,

The detail was so glorious.

I looked at this picture,

Looked in complete admiration.

I walked slowly round the room

Stopping in front of each artwork,

Admiring the skill,

Admiring the wonders in each image.

Then I saw it,

The picture that captured the essence,

The essence of the place where I was.

Walking round the gardens

I saw them,

Saw these trees

That seemed out of place.

I at first wondered,

Wondered why they were there,

Were they there in error?

On entering the Manor

All became clear,

As I walked round I saw,

Saw the beauty of those trees

Framed in the windows,

A combined artwork

Of nature and architecture,

Which said so much to me,

And touched my soul.

There in the gallery I saw it,

Saw the picture,

The picture that captured the essence,

The essence of the place where I was.

An archway was shown

Framing a tree behind it,

The artist had captured the wonder,

The wonder that had touched me,

Touched my soul,

As I walked around Croome.

  • Comment from author about the poem: There was an artist in residence at Croome Park when I visited there last week, her name was Jilly Oxlade-Arnott, I wrote this for her. I took the pictures on the day. The Eric Satie is for Dusk Arising a famous work played on a different instrument.

I never cease to be amazed by how different artists can interpret a scene so differently and yet they can all capture the heart of the subject - this is a great write Andy and itself captures what the artist was saying through her work. It is such a shame that so many are unable to understand or appreciate art

    • Goldfinch60

Thank you Michael, yes it is a shame that people struggle to really look at art. It was very noticeable that while I was LOOKING at the artists work in a relatively small room there must have been twenty to thirty people just come through and just saw the artwork but not looking at them.

A lovely write and pic Gold. Yes, I go on mini-travels, including some art shows. At one, an artist had painted the church next to the church hall, where there exhibition was held.

Thanks Orchi, some of the art shows can be superb.

Great to know that us old codgers can still be gobsmakked by the beauty of natural things around us here in our own backyard of Worcestershire. Croome is on my bucket list.
Gynopodie No 1, probably Eric's most popular, i have recordings of by several artists on various instruments ans ensembles but it's at it's best as a solo piece as here. Gynopodies 2 and 3 are superb too being variations of 1. I seem to recollect these were written for children to learn and perform. Certainly the harmonic progressions across the three were a lesson to me and encouraged me into improv in jazz.
Excellent writing today. Love the repeat theme.

Thank you da, yes us old codgers can still be stopped in our tracks by nature, music and art.
I know what you mean about the Gymnodies and yes they are best on solo instruments.

            Andy,

An awesome write! Your uniqueness of understanding art...whether it be paintings, music, or nature...is incredible!
Listening to the clip, reminded me of the time my son was learning to play the guitar at five years old! The first piece he learned a played for me as a surprise for Motherā€™s Day was ā€œLove Me Tenderā€! Iā€™ll never forget it!

Thank you for sharing and reminding us of this wondrous universe weā€™re fortunate enough to be part of!

            Love to Joyce and you!

            ~Laura~

Thank you Laura, to understand art, nature and music all you need to do is be prepared to look and listen, it sounds easy but many people just seem to rush through their lives and are not prepared to stop, I am quite happy to stop.

              Andy

I know what you mean, my wise friend! Iā€™m trying to do the same while galloping from one continent to another!
                Enjoy your evening!
                Love to Joyce!

THANKS ANDY ~ Thanks for including the SATIE in Classical Guitar, my favourite instrument ! I have seen & heard JOHN WILLIAMS ~ awesome ! Having been raised in Liverpool (Walker Art Gallery) I do have an appreciation of many Genres of Art. Your poem is a "Work of Art" ! Verse 1. Everything we see (if we move slowly) imprints on our sub-conscious ~ and when we see the same scene (on TV or in a Painting or Photo) our sun-conscious connects. That's how we recognise people even after tens of years ! Verse 2. Trees in Windows ~there is always more to stately Homes than initially meets the eye ~ how ingenious ! I love SH's one of the UK's infinite blessings ~ who need the rest of EUROPE ! The Towers of Eiffel & Pisa and the Gate of Brandenburg and the Parthenon would all look ugly and out of place in the UK ! Verse 3. You liked it then ??? Thanks for sharing ANDY we all enjoyed this one ~ AMEN. The symbiosis of ART & Architecture is always a Pleasure especially Gardens by Capability (might call my Son that !) Brown. Yours as always BRIAN.

                • Goldfinch60

Brian what a wonderful response to my work, it is much appreciated. The gardens at Croome were designed by Capability Brown and some of the rooms by Robert Adam.
I am sure your son will be highly 'Capable' but in which field only time will tell.

If you are interested the Artist is Jilly Oxlade-Arnott and her work can be seen on the Web
