Preparation Ponderings

Tune: Langran (St Agnes)

('Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face')

******

Come, Lord, help me prepare my heart for you

To worship you, and praise you true anew

Yet not only within church gathering

But to worship you here in everything

Settle our minds, our hearts, our lives on you

You dwell in us by your Spirit, you do

Seek worshippers to worship in spirit

And in truth you reveal, our hearts are lit

So worthy occupation here engaged

Reality, not a performance staged

Help us right place of ritual and rite

To keep, that of you we never lose sight

Here we your creatures, you our Creator

Blessings and graces you on us confer

Inspire us where our love may little be

That it rise to a flame eternally

Having freedom to praise, to worship you

Help us to seek your way, and it pursue

Enabled by your Spirit, here He dwells

In lives redeemed, their testimony tells

O bring refreshment, life, your forgiveness

Giver of what our sins deserve, much less

For mercy mild you show in Christ your Son

Ever our Saviour, e'er the living One

In verse 3 about ritual and rite, I mean it in the sense of not overdoing outward things.
We could be so busy observing rites that miss the main purpose of focusing on the Lord.
Not that ritual is wrong, but I saw one over-doing it. He will be worn out before the service even starts! He was waving arms about, bowing here and there, kneeling every couple of minutes, kissing service books, etc. Much more of that and I would have gone potty!
