Miserable Man.

Goldfinch60

Sitting at his table,

Waiting for his coffee.

Such a miserable expression,

A miserable expression

On his face.

His wife returned,

Coffees on a tray.

His expression did not change,

He still had a miserable expression,

A miserable expression,

On his face.

  • Comment from author about the poem: My wife and I regularly go to a coffee bar and I like looking around people watching in there, I have written many poems about the place and the people, I even write the poems in there and have given them to the people I have written about. I did not give this one to the man of whom I have written.

A true write unfortunately. Some may have reasons to be gloomy, I suppose. But some just grunt, without so much as a 'please' or 'thank you'.

    • Goldfinch60

He may well have had reasons to be gloomy but it didn't appear that way to me. Thanks for your comment Orchi.

Sounds familiar - but who knows what is going on in their lives - thankfully there are many who smile and look happy

      • Goldfinch60

Yes Michael most do smile thankfully.

THANKS UNCLE ANDY: As a physiotherapist I have learned that : the expression on a persons Face is a reflection of the mood of their Mind & Spirit. At least I am allowed to tickle them and make them smile! We see a lot more smiles in NZ than the UK and we know why. The MAORI are always smiling! Brian & I both love GLEN and In the MOOD is a classic. Brian gives a lovely talk and CD presentation on the Life & Music of GLEN MILLER! Have a great DAY : Smiling is infectious : love to JOYCE : Love ANGELA XXXX

His reflection was totally miserable, it never really changed - some people are most strange.

I have a collection of cassettes (yes cassettes) of all of the Glenn Miller radio shows, nine tapes in all, and the strange thing is that the tunes are all very much the same and the only ones that stand out are the twenty or so ones that became famous.

          SMILE, IT CONFUSES PEOPLE!

Great observational piece. Begs the question - where are these people mentally? Most of us have a 'social front' we present to the world and we rarely let it down unless we are upset or in a period of depression. So it is difficult to relate to such people.
A similar thing which raises a smile within me is the collection of oblivious strollers we meet who wear an obscure grimace as they pound along the pavements. I'm chuckling now, i'm sure some of the are quite frightening to little old ladies.

Thank you da, it is something that I do, people watch, to get ideas for poems. You are right we all put on our different masks for different occasions and as you say unless there is something that has happened in our lives we all put on a front. This guy looked as though it was his norm.
When I go walking, especially along My River, the ones that get me are those who are wired into the electronic world - they just do not hear the beauty of Natures Symphony.

I love this song! World War 2 was a topic for a competition I participated in and one of the fields studied was music, since then I've always listened to more jazz from the 40s like this!

            • Goldfinch60

There is some wonderful swing music from that era. Have a listen to the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert, I have a a live recording of it and it is phenomenal.

some days that's all it is.

              • Goldfinch60

                You may well be right.

              • onepauly

also, I liked the music video, it made me feel safe.

                • Goldfinch60

I am glad it made you feel safe, there is a great deal of music that do this.

                  Andy,
That man should listen to some John Miller music as I just did...thanks to you!
Maybe that will make him smile like John Payne and Sonja Henie in the clip! He might even get the urge to dance!
Oh well, to each his own I guess!

                  Have a wonderful day.
                  Love to Joyce and you.

                  ~Laura~

                    Thank you Laura.

                    (Glenn) Miller.

I don't think he would enjoy anything, it just seemed to be the way he was.

                    Andy

                      Yes, Glenn Miller!
I had John (Payne) on my mind!
Haven’t seen one of his movies since my dad passed away!
                      Maybe I’ll do that today.
