IRONY

Michael Edwards

IRONY

Bought a new car the other day

very sleek in gun metal grey

only a hundred on the clock

when suddenly to my dismay

I got a  shock

a bright light flashed

elation dashed

a speeding ticket’s on its way.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Thankfully I've now worked out how the speed limiter works. Not sure if the camera caught me or someone in the oncoming lane - will have to watch the post.

Oooh you don't strike me as a regular speedster my friend - what a depressing welcome for your new car - - hope that awaited post never comes..... love the driftwood cottage and bench .

I am usually so careful - but in a new car which just purrs along speed can be so deceptive - at the worst it will probably be a training session. According to the clock I was only a couple of miles over the limit. I have been driving for over 50 years and at one time was doing in excess of 30,000 miles a year so a 'training session' will be interesting. Anyway it may not have captured me but the other vehicle - nevertheless a wake up call.

Well if you will buy these new fangled Austin 7's! You will have to be more careful.

Seriously though I was caught speeding and went on a Speed Awareness Course, it was very good and I came away with the opinion that it was so good that everyone should go on one.

I must wait and see if the envelope drops on the mat.

Well, in high-speed trains, we don't realise we may be going 100mph. If on a platform and one whizzes by, we realise how fast it is actually going.
Miss Berles doing 200mph on the motorway?

No - she can't quite get up to that speed on her bike - but she tries.

When the road is wide, all the buildings are set far back and the pavements are completely clear of pedestrians and just 100 yards down the road you are in open countryside you can be lulled into false senses. wow - when he's carved it do post it - looking forward to seeing it.

Michael, i guess the Police just wanted a picture of your nice new car too? you can't blame them I bet it's very nice.
            You're in good company

Or perhaps me - if I'd known I'd have smiled - cheers Andrew.

I got caught out around this time last year when i'd had my new car a few days. I put it down to unfamiliarity.
I was offered the choice of points and a fine or a speeding course.
The course turned out to be the second most boring four hours of my life but i was very surprised by how many drivers had no clue of speed restrictions on our roads.
So many drivers appear to regard the highway code as a crib book on how to get a driving licence and then forget its contents.

I'm looking forward to being bored - I'll take a notebook - they might think I'm taking notes but maybe a poem or two? lol
