Degradation of words

Gogeta

Like, like you know, do you know what I mean.

When did these become part of every sentence?

Shakespeare, wordsworth, keats, am I really in the minority of people who speak the King's English?

I know you might say the 'Queen's' but clearly with this new age, some things have gone badly wrong

Every other word is 'like', or a profanity.

When did the simple English language become too complicated for simpletons of today?

It says a great deal when you can only have a decent, civilised conversation with those over 75

Society is as broken as the spoken language.........

Rest in peace humanity

  • Comment from author about the poem: Everyday I catch conversations in different places, different people but always have the same consistencies. Like has been turned into some universal language of its own, or 'you know what I mean' at the end of almost every sentence. I'm 32 and I've had 1 conversation with someone in my age bracket who speaks English, I'm not a genius, prodigy, snobbish or proper. I just like having a traditional conversation, why has today's society made that so difficult

I wish I knew the answer. The standards are also falling among even those who should (and surely do) know better like News readers for example. I have only just heard on the BBC a reporter saying 'The Local Council are....' - I get really cross. Love the poem.

Thank you for taking the time to read it 😁

WELCOME 'GOGETA' (like the name !) ~ Thanks for your first Poem. I welcome the point you are making ! This misuse of the King's English is not only the spoken word but the written word as well. MODERN POETRY lacks Rhyme ~ Rhythm ~ Grammar and Reason and there are many examples on MPS ! Michael Edwards and I do try to encourage Classical Poetry like Sonnets ~ Acrostics ~ Vilanelles ~ Haiku etc and there are some excellent Poets on MPS like FAY and Maxine etc. The reason for 'crude speak' is manifold ! In the UK English Language & Literature is badly taught ~ Texting destroys Language and the language on TV is hardly the King's English. Dress ~ Manners & Language are all victims of the 21st Century casualness ! I agree with you about the 75+ they retain courtesies of manners ~ speech and language ~ largely missing in today's society, I'm 35. Thanks for caring and sharing (you know what I mean !!!!!!) more please. Please check my site which I share with my Fiancee (ANGELA ~ 30) who is in New Zealand on Work exchange until October 2019 ! Yours Poetically BRIAN (UK) The way MPS works is: We read & comment on each others POETRY and you can build up a cohort of MPS Friends, OK.

Very good and very true write. I too do not understand what is happening to the English Language.
I have two issues with your poem
1 - The first line should have a like at the end of it, like.

2 - I would like to think that I could have a civilised conversation with you and I am only 70.

        Welcome to MPS Gogeta.

Well you have a great sense of humour, and you don't sound a day over 50 😉

          • Goldfinch60

Humour must always be in our lives.

I totally agree with you. It's a sad situation even where I'm from in America where "like" is every 4th word or less. I'm in my 30's but all my friends are much older. Loved the write!

Language is yours and mine platform to unwind our thoughts into poetry. But we do not own it. Nor control it. Whereas i share your concerns for ever encroaching 'grunt speak' type english and do find certain accents abraisive - wasn't it ever so?
Language is just a channel by which we communicate and there have always been better and lesser communicators. Blame - if it should fall anywhere - should be leveled upon our falling educational standards here in U.K.

Your point is well made and applauded.
