Tune: St Clement
('The day thou gavest Lord is ended')
Romans 3 v.19-20
*********
Whate'er the law says, it says to those
Under the law, so mouths stopped, close
Mankind standing before God silent
No self-defence, but penitent
Our spiritual state, sinners, guilty
If Christ is not our Saviour, see
Nothing I can say in my defence
But solely trust in Christ from hence
I coem to you Lord, hands here empty
Nothing to offer to you, see
With which to save self, but receiving
Christ's righteousness, I believing
Not my good works, they ne'er can atone
For Christ me saves, and He alone
Not my self-righteousness I give you
But in Christ stand before you true
By deeds of law no flesh justified
In God's sight, they shall be denied
For by the law is knowledge of sin
Only God's grace can cleanse within

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 9.8.9.8. metre. Based on a short study-book meditation. Maybe not the usual sort of poem on silence. Erm, not my famous 'Silent Poem' with no words, which runs for 3,647 verses. How would you know when you reached the end?! How long is your 'Silent Poem'

You gone to bed, maybe reading this Evening hymn-tune of a Morning?!
I like the meter change. It's almost like a limitation lifted from the previous works. Expanded, it seems. Well done.
I haven't written a "Silent" poem, maybe I should try it.
Thanks Nicholas. So, this isn't about 'silence' in itself really. There's a 'Common Metre' for hymns. It's 8.6.8.6. You may see it a lot, cos it's common! Yep, anyone can do a 'Silent Poem' - the sort with no words in it! heehee, It's cheating a bit. But hey, you could have 10 million verses to it. No-one knows when they've reached the end. All written instantly. lol.
I've never thought of it that way. Hmmmm.
Heehee, it's bit fraudulent, ain't it? Meanwhile, I'm busy in another poem - what is 'Dodecahexa' when it's at home?! lol.
Dude I have no idea. Seems to be some kind of Copter?
Silent poem = I always know when I've come to the end by the (c) notice - simples.
Thanks M. How many verses has your Silent poem? As I say, there\'s no words in it, so anyone can 'write' one! lol. We can all write music too, such as that '4 mins 33 secs of silence' piece.
I didn't hear that piece the other night - it was great.
I just got the joke. Michael shame on you xD
Not sure if you're familiar with it Nicholas but 4mins 33secs is a piece of 'music' by American experimental composer John Cage (1912–1992). It was composed in 1952, for any instrument or combination of instruments in which they all remain silent. I wrote a poem about it a couple of year back and if I can find it I'll repost it tomorrow.
Good deal man. No, I had no idea such a thing existed.
An example of a silent poem, to help ya:
"Sssshhhhhh!" - short version
"Ssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh!" - longer version
Erm, that's it! lol.
I heard that Orchi
found the poem by the way
Nice! Should be a good read. Here's mine:
Like that, orch?
Yes, an excellent 'Silent Poem' there from you N. Well, in the clip 'The voice of prayer is never silent', except if we doze off in church! Ooh. That bit's not in the hymn! lol.
I'm sure someone somewhere is working on incorporating that, haha.
Oops, they've not included that verse in the clip - the real line of the hymn, I mean. I did however hob-nob a bit with the Bishop of Salisbury before he was a Bishop (Salisbury Cathedral, UK, in the clip). Well, I met him once or twice. lol.
Haha, parlaying with the bishop. Nice one.
Erm, but neither is the Bishop in the clip. He is in one somewhere though. I could hob-nob with our Prime Minister, who goes with hubby to a church near-ish where I live. When she's not in Brussels of course.
Good write Orchi.
