Tune: Lux Benigna
('Lead, kindly light')
Based on a Collect - a Formal Prayer
**********
Lighten our darkness, we beseech you, Lord
And by your word
Guide us, for your word it be a lamp sure
And a light pure
Onward each step, trusting where we not know
What lies ahead, but believe good will show
And by your great mercy us do defend
Unto the end
From all perils and dangers of this night
Whate'er would fright
This do we pray, for love of Christ your Son [Amen]
Our good Shepherd and our redeeming one
Opening our hearts to you, you who know
All hearts full[y] so
Seeking to grow in Christ's image each day
And go His way
Empowered by your Spirit, He within
Us, we His temples, He does cleanse from sin
Ever hoping, strengthen our faith in you
To you e'er view
Comfort and heal where we struggle, downcast
It not e'er last
Going on by faith, not by things of sight
'Til dawns the day of everlasting light

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 10.4.10.4.10.10. metre. The original words of the Collect/Formal Prayer (or near-original) are in italics. The short Prayer is in the correct order as the original, finishing where 'Amen' is inserted. I have also touched on some lines from the original hymn and adapted them a bit in this poem..

Orchi,
A fine write!
...and YES, let’s
“believe that good will show”
“Going on by faith, not by things of sight
‘Til dawns the day of everlasting light”
Thank you for sharing!
~Laura~
Thanks Laura.
Ya know, when I first started reading your poetry some odd years ago, I was certain that it would repeat itself eventually.
I'm glad that it hasn't.
A good read, Steve.
Thanks N. Well, I can always dig out 'repeat' poems! lol. That a threat from me?
an inspirational hymn poem without a doubt...
Not inspired by Manfred Man's Blinded by the Light then...... Neville 🙂
Thanks Neville. Well, maybe for St Paul, blinded by the light, in his conversion experience, falling off his horse, if he was on one?
I am steadily loosing the sight in my left eye due to Non Arteritic Ischaemic optic neuropathy.. one of the reasons I am posting poems here..
Clip changed, as previous one was more modern! It was OK, but it threw out the metre, all out of sequence. 'Moor and fens and crag and torrent' is in the original. They didn't take 'country walks' in the modern version!
You never fail Orchi - how's Fido?
Thanks Michael. Fido OK - Woof!
May that light be forever with us all.
Thanks Gold.
