Mended Wing

Mended Wing

A meadowlark I kept

In my dad’s old shoe box

He hadn’t healed just yet

And was my pet I thought

Unlike my parakeet

In his cage each day

The meadowlark had been free

And would one day fly away

My dog I still loved

And I petted him all the time

But the meadowlark was from above

And had fallen from the sky

To the sky he would return

After I’d held him close

And with time I learned

He was ready to be let go

His broken wing had mended

From the best of my care

And his recovery with me ended

When he flew away repaired

What a wonderful story of healing a meadowlark and then setting him free - - thank you so much for sharing it w.c. - I was with each line of your loving attempt at saving a bird and its end in success.

This poem was a true one. I wanted the bird to be my pet, but i was thrilled when he flew away.

You lucky person to have been blessed with this opportunity to reach into the wild.... Oh that fairy tales could come true and your beautiful repaired patient becomes your friend, what joys and unknown adventure would lay ahead.
But life isn't like that, except that we can have those dreams.

Lovely piece from you today which took my mind to birdland and beyond.

Thanks, dusk! It was a joy to have that meadowlark. I recall the excitement i felt after school, knowing i would soon see my patient in his shoe box.

A pal of mine's older brother had a jackdaw as a friend.... every morning he road a motorbike to work and the jackdaw would perch on the handlebars until a certain speed then it lifted off.... on returning home the bird would fly alongside him and land on the handlebars again. Really amazing.

Well done wc, I too have restored birds to full health and it is so delightful to see them fly in their freedom.

Yes, Goldfinch. It is so rewarding to help the injured heal.To help another in need is medicinal.
