Of Cathedrals And Dragons

orchidee

More money than most of us will ever have....

£86 million promised by a billionaire...

To rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral

'Could not this money have been given to the poor?'

As is said in part of this Holy Week readings

Though Judas Iscariot only said that, John's Gospel says

Because he cared not for the poor

But was a thief - in charge of the money-bags!

It was when Mary poured ointment on Jesus

A box worth over 10 months wages

All in one go!

Yes, Churches, Cathedrals - God's houses

'Thing's to maintain - buildings, fixtures, fittings, etc

Well, the money will help indirectly

In people's spiritual progress.....

But 'Could not this money have been given to the poor?'

Why so much mourning over a building?

Great and wonderful as it is

Same as 'Dragon's Den' and things like that

The millionaires are wise

But won't part with money for free

To be expected maybe...

But they would hardly miss the amounts they do give

And they want percentage returns

To amass even more money

What to do, if £86 million grew on trees?

Well, it does - paper notes made from trees!

Though if it magically fell to earth for us

Would we give...

'Could not this money have been given to the poor?'

A poor widow in Jesus' days gave two mites

The smallest amount....

He said she gave more than all the rich people

As she gave her all....

Very powerful and truthful write Orchi. Surely the Church is "When any two or three are gathered together in my name" are the only Churches we need.
Such a shame to see this great building destroyed but the Catholic Church has the money to rebuild it but as you say that money SHOULD be used for the poor in our society.

Thanks Gold. Yes, I agree, the 'church' is not the building really, it's the people. When Mary poured the ointment over Jesus, it was right for the occasion. Though Judas complained, a bit like suddenly thinking 'What about those starving in the world?' as though thinking of them only in a one-off time, and not bothering about them most of the time.

Thanks for this tribute to "NOTRE DAME and the (spiritually) Poor People of PARIS". I agree with you that the CHURCH is the PEOPLE (like you & l) and not the Magnificent Cathedrals in our great cities or the Humble Church Buildings in LESOTHO ! The Poor you have always with you ! BUT there is only ONE NOTRE DAME (To see Her is to Believe !) and I believe She should & will ~ like PHEONIX ~ rise from the ashes ~ AMEN ! Thanks for caring ~ please pray for PARIS in this very HOLY WEEK !
      Blessings & Love

        Thanks for your QUERY \"D\"
CHRISTIANITY (which is represented by NOTRE DAME) is all a MATTER of FAITH (BELIEF) Without FAITH it is impossible to have COMMUNICATION with GOD and the SPIRITUAL DIMENSION. All HUMANS have the capacity to exercise FAITH (BELIEF) and make contact with CREATOR GOD & The Spritual Dimension. In any Human Community ~ SOME CHOSE to have FAITH and become BELIEVERS and make contact with GOD through Prayer & Praise ! Others choose to not exercise FAITH and remain as UNBELIEVERS ~ Atheist & Agnostics ~ OK We are not born as BELIEVERS so we have to make a conscious choice to exercise FAITH in GOD. Its a very big subject ~ hope that helps !

            Yes, we do!

            Neville,
I really like and agree with your comment! Thank you!

Thanks Neville. Is it evil to give that amount for buildings?! Well ,a good deed in itself, but oh how much it could have helped the poor.

I am with you on this one - who would give such large sums to one of the richest establishments in the world when there are so many needy?

                Thanks Michael.

Reminds me of when Windsor castle was half burned down. Think it was i the early 90's, but I have no recollection of how much was spent to repair it back to its original shape. You've hit a chord against the rich whilst they watch the bottom rung of society fall victim to constant pain and suffering in which you have described beautifully with a huge meaning behind it. Great work!!

                  Thanks Kevin.
