No Longer Jazz.

Goldfinch60

Forty years they had been together,

The six of them,

Playing their instruments.

Once they played jazz,

They still tried,

But have never changed a note

For thirty years.

They could play their instruments,

Play them well,

But it was not jazz.

Jazz is new,

Composed as they play,

But not in this band.

Nothing drew me,

Drew me into the wonder,

The wonder of jazz.

They always played the same,

Jazz is innovative,

This nights music wasn’t,

To me it wasn’t jazz.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I went to the Jazz Club last night and the band who were celebrating their forty years together. There were only two numbers that seemed to get a reaction within me, it was not a good night as far a jazz was concerned, to my mind anyway. They played the Duke Ellington number 'It don't mean a swing', my friend turned to me and said that he reckoned the 'Duke' would be turning in his grave.

Ohh, not so good an evening as some, then?

    • Goldfinch60

No not last night. The most disappointing one I have been to.

Oh dear! Well, I've sort of given up on that Poetry Night held bi-monthly. It seemed to mutter and waffle on - is this going to be a long, drawn-out poem, mumbled consistently? Oh yes, is the reply!

As a session electric guitar player one of my favourite 'jobs' is to play on 'Sultans of Swing' when I get chance. Another favourite is with girl singers when they want to do 'Spooky'.
Those were the days my friend!

            Ex animo, Alan

Those were the days indeed, I used to play in a swing band and we had some wonderful jazzers in the band.

Thanks UNCLE ANDY for your frankness ! When I (BRIAN) worked in Industry I played acoustic Guitar (Hofner Cello cutaway) in a JAZZ BAND. I played fromm Chord sequences and the Leader (Clarinettist) said my SOLO SPOT should be different everytime we played ! A CHORD notation gives 100+ variations ! Loved the video ~ two of my fave Jazz Artists ! Thanks for sharing !

Blessings & Peace to YOU & JOYCE

Playing from chord sequences is what many jazzers do, some of the avant garde jazzers leave those sequences and play in their own world bu still they can be wonderful.
You cannot play a wrong note in jazz as "It is the note that you wanted to play 'at that time!'"

Thanks Uncle Andy ~ That really is the BEAUTY of New Oleans Jazz. They play from the Heart. Tony Bennet 93 is a great Jazz Singer and still doing 100 concerts a Year ~ mainly in the USA. He does DUETS with Lady Gaga and said in interview *She is great to JAM with because she sings different words and a different riff every time - but always in time in key & in chord* AMEN Long live TONY BENNET the last of the FEW !

Blessings & Peace to YOU & JOYCE
                  Yours as always BRIAN ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™

Such a shame yet how well you record it.

                  • Goldfinch60

Thank you Michael - I always have next month to look forward to.

The sadness of a disappointing night is hanging between your lines. Ah well, you can't win em all!

                    • Goldfinch60

You certainly can't Fred, but I'll be back next month.

                    • Fay Slimm.

Knowing how well jazz was at one time brought over by such as the Duke makes an evening's effort at entertainment either successful or not - hoping next time the Club will play real jazz for you Andy.....

                      • Goldfinch60

Thank you Fay, I am sure all will be fine next time as it is a group being put together for the evening so they will not be too used to each other and will play their own ways.
